The Role Oversees data communications within the Regional network; implements, configures, coordinates, controls, maintains, supports, and monitors usage of the network; maintains and repairs network components; provides end-user support for network and hardware issues; consults with other ITS staff as a technical resource for client departments during the planning and implementation of custom networks. Duties/Responsibilities
  • Monitors and evaluates region-wide network to ensure performance, availability, and reliability. Programs and runs monthly reports to identify usage trends and assess and recommend system growth requirements to management. Informs management of potential service level problems, identifies possible solutions, and assists to establish growth plans.
  • Maintains and repairs network components. Monitors network for viruses and takes remedial action as required (e.g., isolating infected components). Provides network support and reports problems to supervisor and service provider.
  • Builds, maintains, and troubleshoots Storage Area Networks (SANs) using hardware and connection standards, configurations; analyses and reports on performance.
  • Monitors journals and internet sites for network software version upgrades and patches. Downloads and tests patches, and acquires upgrades for testing environments. Upgrades/patches online production server operating systems, motherboard Bios, applications, and other components as required.
  • Participates to develop and implement backup and disaster recovery strategies for all servers.
  • Participates to develop documentation and design techniques to support current and planned networks. Documents network equipment configuration.
  • Provides network-related expertise to analyze systems/software requirements, components, and contract specifications when participating on interdivisional project teams. Identifies problems, cost issues, potential vendors and recommends resolution/selection to project team. Determines core system requirements and recommends same to supervisor.
  • Provides network support for telecommunications (e.g., voice over internet protocol).
  • Assigns network-level security access to groups/users.
  • Prepares and maintains network server backup systems. Works with users to identify and recommend backup/recovery requirements. Designs and maintains off-site detailed backup and archival tape library for the network. Prepares and maintains server archives to backup and restore data in the event of data loss, machine failure, software failure, and user error.
  • Contact vendors for support.
  • Resolves problems unresolvable by the IT service desk.
  • Hosts domain names to the internet for the townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot, and Woolwich.
  • Sets up, configures, and maintains security camera system servers, transit operations system servers, and facilities systems management servers.
  • Sets up, maintains, configures, troubleshoots, and advises on the corporate wide network printing environment, including physical and network-related components.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of current computer and mobile technologies, languages, hardware, network and server technologies, and programming/scripting language processes acquired through a minimum 3-year university degree in Computer Science or 3-year community college diploma in Computer Systems Technology plus 3 years of related experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude and analytical and technical skills to analyze hardware and software conditions, probe for information, apply principles, and resolve user problems.
  • Ability to organize own time effectively, prioritize work, meet immediate and inflexible deadlines, and achieve results.
  • Human relations and communication skills to deal with end users at all levels of computer skill and knowledge.
  • Ability to travel to other locations within the Region.
  • Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  • Language Communication (Written & Verbal): Ability to read, understand, and apply information found in publications and trade journals, software and hardware manuals, and system design and development documentation.
  • Ability to document network-related policies and procedures, and prepare network usage and monitoring reports.
