The School of Public Policy is currently seeking a Full-time Staff Limited Term Data Analyst for approximately 9 months.
The School of Public Policy (SPP), the University of Calgary is Canada's leading policy school. The School was founded in 2008 by renowned economist Jack Mintz with a vision to drive policy discourse with relevant research, outreach, and teaching.
This position reports to the Director of the Simpson Centre and contributes to research focused on social and economic policy at SPP. It normally involves working Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week with occasional work outside of regular hours as well as potential travel within Canada.
The position entails undertaking research in a team and independently; coordinating the initial setup of a large-scale research project; coordinating ongoing research programming, research projects, and outreach activity; presentation and communication of research and research results to various audiences.
This position involves the provision and application of research services and skills to research projects in environmental and economic policy in the agricultural sector. The research project consists of evaluating the impact of policies supervising digitalization in the agricultural sector. The incumbent will perform economic modeling using existing public and private datasets.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Applies analytical skills for the collection, formatting, analysis, and effective presentation of data.
- Organizes time effectively to produce research results by set deadlines.
- Collaborates regularly and closely with others for research and verification of results.
- Regularly updates project team on data collection and analysis, preparing and presenting reports.
- Follows set guidelines for completion of data analysis, recommending changes to research methods as necessary.
- Assists in developing multi-year strategic plans that anticipate policy changes.
- Represents SPP externally, including media interviews.
- Assists in the development of funding applications.
- Completes other tasks as required.
- Contributes to collaborative research projects.
- Supports the development of academic publications.
- Undertakes qualitative and quantitative analysis of policy issues in social, economic, and fiscal policy.
- Prepares literature reviews, briefing documents, research papers, technical papers, and presentations.
- Provides leadership and technical expertise to other team researchers.
- Works independently with limited direct oversight.
- Develops and communicates policy implications and recommendations.
- Coordinates and supports the development and execution of research projects.
- Develops timelines and research criteria for varied research projects.
- Liaises with external research contractors as needed.
- Contributes to preparation of stewardship reports.
- Coordinates and assists with developing research-related activities including conferences and symposia.
- Maintains strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Presents research and findings to interested parties.
- Updates and maintains external communications.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Completion of at least a Master's degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, Economics, or a related area, with a strong preference for a PhD.
- At least two years of research experience in the relevant fields.
- Knowledge of current social, environmental, and economic policy issues.
- Demonstrated qualitative and quantitative research skills.
- Proven ability to engage and build partnerships with various stakeholders.
- Proficiency in relevant technical software and Microsoft Office programs.
- Familiarity with Julia, Python, Stata, SAS, R, or other statistical programs.
- Strong analytical skills in decision-making and problem-solving.
- Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills for data maintenance and research programming.
- Experience supporting funding proposals and grant writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Adaptable and flexible in a changing environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively and interact respectfully with diverse contacts.
