Job Summary

The Track Maintainer/Truck Driver is responsible for the maintenance of track components. The position leads crews to ensure that fixtures on the railroad work properly. The incumbent participates in inspecting, repairing, and replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballast.

Major Responsibilities

· Inspect and maintain track structure and right-of-way to CN’s specifications

· Supervise and develop track forces to ensure quality maintenance and safe work performance

· Inspect track work on completion and approve track for service

· Maintain train operating restrictions in alignment with track standards

· Implement safety directives

· Assist in the development of safety programs and goals

· Remove and replace defective ties, rails spikes, and anchors

· Correct deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge

· Install and repair street and railroad crossings

· Assist in the replacement and repair of items such as power-operated switches and insulated joints

· Help to unload ballast as well as unload and distribute track material

· Sort used track material for loading, which may be loaded by hand

· Clear brush, vegetation, snow, and litter from railroad right-of-way

· Establish and maintain drainage

· Clean up after work completion

· Comply with track safety standards, Operating Rules, and Safe work procedures

· Complete work, material inventory, and inspections reports

Working Conditions

· Must be available to work shifts, away from home on various work cycles, and occasional overtime

· Ability to work outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions, involving physical work

· Must be able to perform repetitive physical activities

· Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds (22 kg) frequently and up to 70 pounds (32 kg) occasionally

· Must have good eye-hand coordination and grasping

Requirements

· Foreman or supervisory experience

· Experience in similar working conditions

· High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)

· Valid Driver’s License

· Knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)

Training

Upon hiring, the position attends formal and on-the-job training. The incumbent is required to complete the training program successfully. The position receives classroom training over a period of 4 weeks at 40 hours per week. The training is primarily on health and safety rules and basic machine operator procedures. Successful completion of the classroom and on-the-job training is mandatory to continue employment.

This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.

Résumé des fonctions

Le contremaître ou la contremaîtresse de la voie entretient les éléments de la voie. La personne titulaire du poste dirige les équipes pour s’assurer que les éléments de la voie fonctionnent correctement. Cette personne participe à l’inspection, à la réparation et au remplacement des rails, des traverses, des aiguillages et du ballast.

Principales responsabilités

· Inspecter et entretenir la structure de la voie et l’emprise selon le cahier des charges du CN

· Mettre sur pied et superviser des équipes d’entretien de la voie de manière à assurer la qualité de l’entretien et la réalisation des travaux en toute sécurité

· Inspecter les travaux en voie et autoriser la mise en service de la voie

· Maintenir les restrictions d’exploitation des trains en conformité avec les normes de la voie

· Mettre en œuvre des consignes de sécurité

· Participer à l’élaboration de programmes et à l’atteinte d’objectifs en matière de sécurité

· Participer au retrait et au remplacement des traverses, crampons et anticheminants défectueux

· Corriger les défauts de nivellement, de dressage et d’écartement de la voie

· Participer à la pose et à la réparation de passages à niveau et de traversées

· Participer aux travaux de remplacement ou de réparation d’éléments comme les aiguillages à manœuvre électrique et les joints isolants

· Aider à décharger le ballast, décharger et distribuer le matériel de voie

· Trier le matériel de voie usagé en vue de son chargement, possiblement à la main

· Enlever les herbes, les broussailles, la neige et les débris sur l’emprise ferroviaire

· Établir et maintenir l’écoulement des eaux

· Nettoyer le chantier après l’achèvement des travaux

· Respecter les normes de la voie, les règles d’exploitation et les méthodes de travail sécuritaires

· Produire des rapports sur les travaux, l’inventaire du matériel et les inspections

Conditions de travail

· Disponibilité à travailler par quarts, loin du domicile selon des périodes de travail variées, et à effectuer des heures supplémentaires à l’occasion

· Capacité à travailler à l’extérieur dans diverses conditions météorologiques et environnementales, y compris en effectuant des tâches physiques

· Capacité à effectuer des activités physiques répétitives

· Capacité de lever et de porter des poids de 50 livres (22 kg) fréquemment et des poids jusqu’à 70 livres (32 kg) à l’occasion

Formation

À son embauche, la personne titulaire du poste reçoit une formation théorique et pratique. Cette personne doit réussir le programme de formation. Le ou la titulaire reçoit une formation en classe de 4 semaines à raison de 40 heures par semaine. La formation aborde principalement les règles de santé et sécurité, de même que les techniques de base des conducteurs ou des conductrices de machine. La réussite de la formation en classe et de la formation pratique est obligatoire pour conserver ce poste.
