Project Engineer

Cavendish Farms is a leading producer of frozen food products for retail and foodservice markets throughout Canada, the United States, and around the world. We have state-of-the-art potato processing plants in Prince Edward Island, Lethbridge, Alberta, and Jamestown, North Dakota, and an appetizer plant in Wheatley, Ontario. Our Head office is in Dieppe, New Brunswick and has sales office locations in Toronto, Montreal, and Boston.

Position Summary

The incumbent will lead various projects and new equipment installation to be at a high level of quality, on time, and on budget. The Project Engineer will be a self-starter with a strong work ethic, “Can Do” attitude and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment and is also responsible to be out in the plant, identify and follow through on improvements for day-to-day operations. The successful applicant will also work with the corporate engineering group on various projects.

Relationships and Contacts

This person reports directly to the Engineering and Maintenance Manager.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Develop and manage capital projects from preliminary discussions to installation and commissioning, including:
    1. Scope definition
    2. Consultant management
    3. Equipment specifications
    4. Budget estimation & preparing tender packages
    5. Drawing review & schedule development
    6. Procurement & Contractor supervision
    7. Commissioning and follow-up
  2. Manage information exchange between operations, maintenance, engineering, and vendors for assigned areas of responsibility.
  3. Ensure that projects are on time and budget.
  4. Interact with various departments that are impacted by plant to ensure the best solution and design is being engineered.
  5. Ensure various options are researched and reviewed for equipment, processes, etc.
  6. Determine how automation can be included in the project.
  7. Recommend equipment for purchase.
  8. Conduct meetings and coordinate communication between team members.
  9. Safety of equipment design and of the working team.
  10. Tracking of project details to ensure milestones and targets are met.
  11. Take project lead of power distribution, automation, controls, instrumentation, networking, and other electrical works.
  12. Provide technical support to maintain existing electrical infrastructure.
  13. Help troubleshoot issues with electrical systems such as power distribution, motor controls, and PLCs.

Qualifications and Abilities

  1. Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical, Chemical or equivalent degree.
  2. Five years of relevant experience.
  3. Exposure to a food operating plant environment would be an asset.
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to multi-task.
  6. Strong time management and organizational skills.
  7. Understanding of quality and timeline expectations from all work streams.
  8. Ability to take action to resolve issues that may arise.
  9. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage conflict and build teams.
  10. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoCAD would be an asset.
  11. A proven track record of being pro-active and taking initiative.
  12. Knowledge of the following codes and standards would be an asset: Safeguarding of Machinery, Occupational Health and Safety, Lock Out & Tag Out, Confined Space Awareness, and Working from Heights.
  13. General Awareness of the Canadian Electrical Code and industrial best practices is an asset.
