We are looking for a Policy Analyst to join our talented team. 

Please note the location of this position will be determined later in the recruitment process based on organizational business needs and the successful candidate’s location in Canada. 

NATURE & SCOPE:

The Policy Analyst will work closely with the Manager, Government and Stakeholder Relations to support strategic advocacy priorities and shape public policies related to dogs, animal welfare, and responsible pet ownership. Representing the priorities and needs of our Board of Directors and members means that the Policy Analyst will engage with members and create documentation, implement activities and monitor progress regarding CKC advocacy for our members as well as the health and well-being of all dogs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Policy Work

  • Conduct in-depth research on government policies, legislation, and regulations affecting the dog industry
  • Monitor legislative developments at local, provincial, and federal levels
  • Evaluate the impact of existing and proposed policies on CKC’s mission and the well-being of purebred dogs
  • Provide informed recommendations to CKC leadership based on analysis
  • In collaboration with the manager, develop key CKC policy documents and tools based on member and strategic priorities. These include, but are not limited to policy briefs, position statements, key messages, and external facing publications
  • Support the preparation of CKC submissions, letters and/or input to government and/or other key stakeholders
  • Recruit and support of CKC member volunteer advocacy ambassadors as part of the Board of Directors’ Advocacy Committee
  • Support the running of the Advocacy Committee including scheduling of meetings, communication with committee members and other support activities as assigned

Membership Engagement and Communications

  • Develop and run advocacy volunteer engagement activities to engage with government and stakeholders, advocate for relevant policies and/or share information with CKC members
  • Develop training and engagement activities to keep volunteer members informed, prepared and engaged
  • Support Manager with development of member communications to ensure that CKC staff, the Board of Directors, and our members are informed and engaged with CKC’s advocacy work
  • Write and develop content for sharing across CKC communications channels including email, websites, print and membership portal
  • Support media and public relations efforts regarding advocacy
  • Support communications team and other departments with development of content and key messages for advocacy priorities and activities
  • Assist with developing a roster of subject-matter experts to support CKC positions, policies, strategic advocacy priorities and other relevant work
  • Other duties or projects as required

SKILLS:

  • Relevant university degree in Public Policy, Political Science, or a related field
  • Understanding of legislative processes and government affairs
  • Strong research and analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Demonstrated communications and advocacy abilities including stakeholder and government relations, letter writing, and media relations
  • Experience developing policy statements, briefs, key messages, etc.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team or independently, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities
  • Passion for promoting responsible dog ownership and animal health and well-being
  • Bilingual French/English is an asset
  • Love of purebred dogs
