As a Senior Health and Safety Advisor with Trans Mountain, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a progressive and fast-paced group of experts in the Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) department. This position is based in our Calgary Head Office.

The Senior Health & Safety Advisor is responsible for updates and maintenance of Health and Safety program. This role is the safety generalist assigned to manage programs, solve problems, and resolve safety issues at various Trans Mountain sites.

Key responsibilities:

  • Promote H&S awareness and commitment by building on existing culture and program strengths. Connect with the workforce to communicate the importance of Safety and promote corporate H&S objectives, policies, and procedures. Advance and maintain the Trans Mountain Contractor Safety Program by developing documentation and processes pertinent to contractor safety. Provide leadership and training of the Contractor Safety Program to internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • Program development, program implementation and program auditing Maintain a comprehensive understanding of applicable regulatory structure, standards, guidelines, and requirements.
  • Conduct informal and formal H&S audits and inspections on programs, standards, and contractors. Assess if the programs and people are in compliance with internal and external standards. Advise Trans Mountain H&S management of all compliance issues.
  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct specialized H&S Training. Support on-the-job H&S meetings by providing assistance, direction and resource materials as needed, to enhance overall effectiveness and impact.
  • Track and report incidents and statistics, review documents and prepare resolution strategies and action plans, provide written documentation of site issues and resolution strategies with pictures documenting activities, before and after issues, make presentations to management on H& S on activities and manage actions to deliverable dates. Draw data from contractor submitted KPI’s, performed field inspections and incident investigations for company metrics, internal reports and lessons learned communications.
  • Manage the Capital Project Program for Health & Safety Department to support Operations with safety equipment procurement, replacement, maintenance, and training.
  • Participate in emergency response planning, preparation, and efforts. Assume the role of H&S officer during emergency response exercises, drills, and events.
  • Assess incidents for proper classification, facilitate root cause analyses of reported incidents such as: near misses, personal injury, or vehicle collision Management of violations of H&S regulations and codes, make recommendations for corrective actions, and follow-up to ensure implementation and monitor effectiveness.

Qualifications and Professional Experience

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline, such as Health, Safety and Environment (OHS or equivalent) or a Business-related degree/diploma.
  • 10+ years of experience preferably in the H&S domain.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation is an asset.
  • Understanding of Safety Management Systems, Inspection Process, Hazard reporting.
  • Experience with Root Cause analysis, Incident investigation, emergency response and Radiation Safety is an asset.
  • Technical writing skills with the ability to understand verbal and written communications, including but not limited to email, OH&S legislation, and industry standards (NFPA, CSA, OPR).
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft applications (including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) for the purpose of word processing, spreadsheets, and information retrieval.
  • Ability to successfully organize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously, frequently under strict deadlines.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to work with a team, take direction from supervisor(s), focus attention on details, follow work rules and adhere to established work schedules.
  • Maintain a regular, dependable attendance, and high level of performance.
  • Maintain a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.

  • Overtime may be required for certain project work.
  • Travel: up to 25%.
  • Driver’s License required.
