Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the firm’s Management Committee the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy and compliance within the firm, overseeing accounting functions, regulatory and financial reporting, performing analysis and producing executive reports, and maintaining the highest standards in accounting policies and procedures. This role interacts with all levels of the firm.

This individual will approach their responsibilities with rigor, precision, and a strong connection to our culture and purpose. Key components of the role include the following:

Responsibilities

A. Leadership

  • Oversee all accounting functions, guiding the accounting team and setting strategic goals, priorities and plans.
  • Manage and coach the accounting team to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to produce and manage departmental budgets.

B. Financial Management

  • Provide strategic management over all accounting functions.
  • At the direction of the management team, perform targeted financial analysis and reporting which is required for making strategic business decisions.
  • Produce summarized monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting.
  • Direct and prioritize accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls ensuring accuracy and adherence to Canadian accounting standards and best practices.
  • Ensure appropriate reporting with all tax and governmental authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with the Law Society of Manitoba's rules and regulations in connection with trust accounts, billing practices and other accounting related matters.
  • Manage and report on cash management, working capital, and firm audits.
  • Prepare account reconciliations and key accruals.
  • Collaborate with management to produce the annual budget ensuring identified financial goals are addressed, highlighting variances with appropriate descriptions and analysis and recommend remediative action.
  • Identify operational improvement opportunities that support efficient and accurate financial analysis and reporting.
  • Clearly and accurately present summary financial information to the partnership.

C. Relationships and Partnership Support

  • Work with the firm’s professional accountants to prepare, review and present official financial statements for the firm and the partnership.
  • Manage relationships with financial institutions and insurance providers.
  • Work with the Law Society of Manitoba in relation to accounting and trust reporting.
  • Provide support to partners in managing the financial aspects of their practices.
  • Develop a strong working relationship with the firm's leadership team.
  • Undertake such other accounting or administrative tasks as may be assigned by the Chief Operating Officer and Management Committee.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 7 years experience in a senior financial leadership role.
  • CPA required.
  • Excellent business acumen and demonstrated professional integrity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly analytical with well-developed reasoning and decision-making skills, including strategic thinking, information gathering and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently make accurate and clear assessments within an ever changing business landscape, taking thoughtful and proportionate action.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships across multiple management levels and with staff.

Compensation
Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience. An annual bonus will be considered based on efforts deemed to have been outside the normal expectations of the role which may include special projects of a significant nature. The amount of bonus will also take into consideration overall firm financial performance.
