About us:
Nomic was founded with the purpose of making biology easier to measure. To do this, we have untangled some of the most difficult problems in protein profiling. Our team is combining DNA nanotechnology, high-dimensional flow cytometry, laboratory automation, and machine learning to develop the world’s highest throughput proteomic platform: the nELISA.
Since spinning out of McGill University, we have partnered with and provided platform access to dozens of drug discovery groups including GSK, 4 of the top 10 pharmas, and leading biotechs. We have recently launched a state of the art manufacturing and protein profiling facility that enables multiplexed measurement of >2.5M samples a year, generating an effective 500M protein assays in the process.
We are building a diverse team of engineers, scientists, and world-changers. We like to break down difficult problems using a first principles approach, often leveraging the latest breakthroughs from across the scientific and technological spectrum to drive our mission forward.
Nomic is headquartered in Montreal, Canada with a satellite research lab in Boston, Massachusetts. The majority of our team is based in Montreal and works in a new, shared office/laboratory space.
About the role:
Our Engineering R&D team’s mission is to de-risk and develop improvements to the nELISA platform, spanning from core DNA nanoarchitecture improvements to lab workflow improvements. As an R&D Engineer, you will play a critical, first-hand role in the lab in developing next-generation, highly scalable assays that drive the advancement of our nELISA platform. In particular:
This role combines a substantial amount of engineering design work, bench work, and teamwork with your R&D colleagues.
In engineering the nELISA platform, you will get to employ a wide range of biochemical and analytical methods such as: antibody conjugation, DNA modification, spectroscopy/microscopy/cytometry, protein purification, surface passivation, and fluorescent labeling.
You will play a lead role in designing new nano-scale DNA constructs, developing improved nELISA assay reagents, and testing all functional aspects of the nELISA system in suitable R&D tests. You will collaborate with our multidisciplinary Engineering R&D and Automation teams to carry out biosensor development experiments and to execute, and recursively optimize, any large-scale experiments.
You will design large scale assay optimization campaigns that efficiently probe bioassay parameter space and guide further R&D exploration. Through collaborating with your R&D, scientific and engineering teammates to identify new technical solutions, you will also communicate analytical results to support decision-making within R&D and company-wide.
You will also leverage your technical expertise to develop new nELISA assay modalities, and bring them to the proof-of-concept (POC) stage by generating appropriate supporting data.
You’ll be an integral part of our efforts to "scale n" by leading the development of new protocols for on-boarding protein targets to our platform that serve as fit-for-purpose proteomic assays.
Train, work with, and mentor earlier career teammates to increase our team’s overall R&D bandwidth and generate high priority POCs and platform improvements.
What we’re looking for:
PhD degree in bioengineering (or a related engineering-focused field of study), or equivalent combination of graduate research experience and industry experience.
5+ years of technical wet lab experience leveraging biosensing fundamentals to build biotechnology platforms from the ground up.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and an independent problem solver.
Highly proficient in proteomic tools and their associated methods. In particular you would be an expert on multiple of: immunoassays, nucleic acid amplification, DNA nanoarchitecture and design, separation-based techniques for biological samples and compounds, biophysics / fluorescence, and signal processing.
Together with deep knowledge of, and first hand experience optimizing: surface chemistry (passivation, functionalization, regeneration), DNA-based circuits and DNA biosensor designs, fluorophores/fluorescence and FRET, antibody-antigen interactions and ligand binding, and all things to do with bead-based biosensors.
Coupled with strong fundamental understanding of the design and operating principles behind existing genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomics platform technologies.
Experience leading and executing iterative biosensor wet lab research and development projects in a fast-paced startup environment.
Join us if you:
Connect deeply with our mission, ambition and sense of duty. Our mission isn’t marketing flash: we developed our technology to better measure biology and discover biomarkers for early disease detection. We firmly believe we will be successful in literally eradicating certain diseases by enabling them to be diagnosed earlier. We also believe that our hard work to bring this technology to its full potential is our duty.
Are up for a challenge and want to grow: We are a team of problem-solvers, and we continually put ourselves to the test and go into the unknown. We have a growth mindset, both on hard and soft skills, and we rely on each other to give critical and candid feedback to ensure that we can all reach our full potential.
Want to be at the cutting-edge of biotechnology. The nELISA is a new tool that leverages DNA nanotechnology to generate proteomic data more efficiently than ever before. You get to design, build and run the system that will run the technology going forward.

Prefer working and communicating within a diverse cross-functional team. You would get to interface with teammates from the Engineering, Operations, and Commercial teams on a daily basis, joining a collaborative, diverse, and inclusive team where your ideas will be valued.
If you are passionate about engineering biosensors and building technology platforms, want to drive innovation in proteomics, and are eager to make a meaningful impact in the world, we invite you to apply and join us on our journey to redefine proteomics and the understanding of biology.
