Water Stewardship Assistant

Requirements We are looking for a passionate water steward and community leader to join our organization. The ideal candidate will enjoy working within the community and will have a strong interest in water
resources, the natural world, and the environment. The Water Stewardship Assistant will be an outgoing, adventurous youth (15 to 30) who is passionate about the environment and is looking forward to a summer spent working outdoors. Their main roles are to provide support to our water quality and quantity monitoring program and offer public stewardship education about Lake Windermere and the Columbia River Basin. The Water Stewardship Assistant will report to the Program Manager, who is also available to provide training and mentorship to the student. The student will work approximately 5 days a week, for a total of 30-35 hours a week. Anticipated employment is from May to August, with some flexibility to start and end dates. The final schedule can be worked out with the right candidate.

Organization Background:
The Lake Windermere Ambassadors are a community-based environmental stewardship NGO working in the East Kootenay region of BC. The Ambassadors have a vision of an ecologically healthy Lake Windermere with balanced management approaches that support recreation and traditional uses, high fish and wildlife values, and economic prosperity in the region.

A Board of Directors representing a diversity of stakeholders in the Lake Windermere watershed guides the organization. The Lake Windermere Ambassadors are currently leading lake water quality monitoring and conducting water related education and stewardship programs. They also encourage the implementation of policies & guidelines in the Lake Windermere Management Plan in their appointed role as Lake Management Committee. The Ambassadors have received accolades for their collaborative initiatives and are being used as a model for community-based water stewardship by Living Lakes International, Living Lakes Network Canada, and Friends of Kootenay Lake.

Duties Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist with water sampling and monitoring - collection of water quality and quantity
measurements and data from the lake and tributary streams
• Assist with the care and calibration of scientific instruments
• Assist in identify key fish and bird species (when applicable)
• Write weekly sampling report for the local newspaper
• Interact with the public, especially visitors and youth, through community education and
outreach
• Create, plan and host half day educational summer camps for kids
• Create content for, and regularly update all of, our organization's social media channels
including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
• Assist with general office duties such as filing and data entry.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Attention to detail
• Being reliable and on time
• Strong communication skills (oral & written)
• A passion for science, the outdoors, and the environment
• A willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Use of a printer, email, phone, and word processing/spreadsheet programs
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Comfortable working in or around water
• Must be between 15-30 years old
• Must have secure living accommodations in or near Invermere, BC for the duration of the
employment period
• Must be a Canadian citizen and legally able to work in Canada.
• Must provide Vulnerable Sector Check (required for our program involving engagement with
children)

Additional Desired Qualifications:
• Pleasure Craft Operator Card
• First Aid training
• A class 5 or class 7(N) driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
• Past experience with water sampling or field data collection
• Ability to identify freshwater fish species such as salmon, trout, and bass and/or to identify
waterfowl and other bird species
• Ability to operate a 10hp outboard motor and/or to navigate a paddleboard, canoe, or kayak
• Confidence in public speaking and interacting with the public
