Nature and Scope
The Data Analyst plays a key role by supporting a broad range of strategic, analytic, and communication initiatives. As an employee of SIIT, this position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.
General Accountability
The Data Analyst plays a critical role in supporting data-driven decision-making at SIIT. This position involves analyzing, interpreting, and reporting on data related to student enrollment, retention, academic performance, institutional effectiveness, and other areas. The Analyst works closely with various departments, including Admissions, Finance, Academics, and Student Services, to provide actionable insights that improve operational efficiency and student outcomes. The Data Analyst will be responsible for planning, designing, and implementing various data collection and evaluation tools. This position will analyze, translate, and share data collected from these sources to promote evidence-based decision-making, as well as assess and inform programs, services, initiatives, and policies.
This position will demonstrate strong research and analytical skills in using analytical tools and quantitative and qualitative methods to monitor, research, analyze, prepare, and present written and verbal reports on internal, environmental, and strategic topics. This position includes the following broad range of accountabilities:
Specific Accountabilities
Data Collection and Analysis
- Gather, clean, and process data from multiple institutional systems, including student information systems (SIS), learning management systems (LMS), and financial databases.
- Analyze large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and correlations relevant to institutional goals, such as student retention, graduation rates, and financial aid distribution.
- Support institutional research efforts by conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses on academic programs, student success initiatives, and operational effectiveness.
- Design and implement evaluation tools including surveys, interviews, and focus groups to gather data.
- Assist with survey design, distribution, and analysis for institutional assessments and student satisfaction studies.
- Collect and manage data collected from various sources.
- Collaborate with other team members to develop and implement strategies for data collection and analysis.
- Provide quantitative data analysis for use in data-based decision making.
- Use appropriate communication methods to present, explain, and discuss results of analysis and trends effectively to drive fact-based decision making at all levels within the Institute.
- Recommend new processes and/or procedures to collect data, identify data issues and discrepancies to improve the accuracy of the data.
- Understand priorities and translate those issues into analytics that support the Institute's objectives.
- Provide input on opportunities and strategies to optimize client impacts that result through programs and services.
- Partner with stakeholders to identify key metrics that drive desired outcomes.
- Package and prepare insights from research and brief various stakeholders for keynote presentations, reports, or any other relevant public-facing activities.
- Research and collect data to determine future trends, training needs, educational pathways, employment needs, opportunities, and challenges affecting employers, considering the requirements for both First Nations communities and urban areas.
Reporting, Compliance & Administration
- Create detailed reports, dashboards, and visualizations using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Excel to communicate findings to stakeholders across the Institution.
- Provide data insights to inform strategic planning, policy development, and accreditation processes.
- Assist the department in developing, maintaining, and updating databases and periodical reports.
- Continuously monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of survey instruments and make recommendations for improvements.
- Satisfy new and evolving reporting requirements.
- Develop and deliver high-quality, well-organized analytical presentations and proactive reports to internal and external audiences to support decision making and to assist with insight on various initiatives.
- Generate and analyze data related to clients, learners, and alumni for a variety of program and service offerings.
- Highlight successes, as well as target areas of improvement and identify gaps in research and data findings.
- Ensure that work is coordinated so that strict and inflexible deadlines are met.
- Ensure the strict confidentiality and privacy of information obtained.
- Perform ad hoc data analyses as requested by various departments, including modeling and forecasting.
- Participate in special projects related to institutional effectiveness, accreditation, and performance metrics.
- Monitor legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to reporting and operations to ensure compliance.
- Drive structured and analytical solutions to key projects, business problems, and opportunities.
- Participate in designing and implementing quality control activities in relation to programs and services.
Relationship Management
- Undertake activities that will help to ensure that program and service plans are aligned with emerging trends, comprehends the needs of key stakeholders, and remains responsive to varied environments.
- Work closely with different units and IT to understand data needs and translate requirements into actionable analysis.
- Participate in cross-functional teams to support data-related projects, such as enrollment management and retention initiatives.
- Establish and support strong, value-based relationships with stakeholder groups including federal, provincial, and First Nation governments, the SITAG network, First Nation entities, and industry partners.
- Establish and enhance a network of strategic relationships with internal and external contacts, agencies, and partners to facilitate and respond to new initiatives and institutional research opportunities, and to ensure that the research data and analytical needs of the research community are addressed.
- Engage employees to identify potential issues or challenges in data collection methods and assist in developing solutions.
- Provide regular and effective communication to stakeholders as requested.
- Demonstrate leadership and initiative in sharing research and outcomes with key internal and external contacts.
- Contribute to SIIT's strategic effectiveness by representing and participating on internal and external committees as required.
Required Qualifications and Experience: A Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or business administration is required. Three to six years of experience in data analysis, preferably in a post-secondary or educational institution. Strong analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills are required. Understanding of research methods, including qualitative and quantitative approaches to data collection, management, analysis, and reporting. Proficiency and experience with tools and systems on MS SQL, Power BI, Microsoft Excel, Python, and Tableau. Experience working with student information systems (e.g., Colleague, Banner, or PeopleSoft) is an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations would be an asset. Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation as travel may be required.
