Reporting to the Senior Fleet Safety Advisor, the Fleet Safety Driver & Equipment Trainer will support the Fleet Safety Team by delivering professional, effective and high-quality driver and operator safety training to GIP employees who operate vehicles and heavy equipment. This position supports cross Canada operations and liaises between the Fleet Operations Team, Corporate HSE Team and Operations Teams.

This role is open to individuals willing to work in Ottawa / Windsor / Barrie as well.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for training drivers and operators to properly and safely operate any GIP vehicles and heavy equipment, including but not limited to, light-duty vehicles, commercial vehicles, snow-clearing equipment, excavators, dozers, graders, rollers, skid steers, rock trucks, etc.
  • Responsible for certifying drivers in various types of vehicles and heavy equipment competencies.
  • Performs risk assessments, both pre-hire and ongoing, to identify and manage risk.
  • Performs duties of a Signing Authority (SA) under the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver Certification Program (DCP).
  • Is a subject matter expert in CVOR, NSC, Provincial Highway Traffic Acts, Regulations, Federal Law and GIP Policies and Procedures as they relate to Transportation.
  • Trains employees with previous commercial vehicle driving experience to drive the vehicle and/or combination in a safe and acceptable manner according to GIP’s Policies and Procedures, Laws, Regulations, Industry accepted standards and MTO/DOT regulatory requirements.
  • Organizes and instructs classroom theory and hands-on practical courses including but not limited to: Defensive Driving Closed Course, Load Securement, Safe Backing, Pre-Trip Inspections, Electronic Logs.
  • Carries out proactive yard visits and audits drivers’ documentation and required safety items to ensure compliance.
  • Monitors weekly driver safety GPS score card reports and re-trains high risk drivers on safe driving practices and assigning online training where necessary.
  • Provides detailed reporting on assessments, trends, competency measurements, and re-certifications as appropriate and/or requested.
  • Creates, maintains and updates Fleet Safety related Training content for both online and in-class.

Position Requirements:

  • 2 years of experience as a Driver Trainer or Fleet Safety Professional is needed.
  • Proven experience as a Driver Trainer/Instructor.
  • Extensive overnight travel on a regular basis.
  • Valid Ontario unrestricted AZ or DZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no demerit points accumulated.
  • MTO Fleet Signing Authority Certification.
  • Ability to operate and teach on a manual transmission vehicle.
  • Ability to drive long distances on a regular basis.
  • Extensive knowledge of CVOR, NSC, HTA, TDG, NSC Standards.
  • Experience with ELD systems, specifically GeoTab Drive.
  • Results-driven with an ability to deliver success in a fast-paced environment.
