In this role, you will be the lead member of a multi-regional team (Alberta South) working collaboratively to engage and support athletes, coaches, and volunteers in the day-to-day program operations of Special Olympics in Alberta. You will engage with other staff and volunteers to develop, implement, and manage day-to-day Calgary program operations of Special Olympics in Alberta, as well as provide leadership, support and supervision to Community Coordinators in Calgary and Southern Alberta.

Community Managers must believe strongly in the Special Olympics mission, vision, and values. With support from their team, they will be expected to do whatever it takes to build or maintain strong, vibrant, and sustainable community organizations within the auspices of each community’s volunteer leadership. This may include at varying levels:

  1. Provide leadership, support and supervision to Community Coordinators in the Southern Alberta region.
  2. Manage the day-to-day program operations in Calgary.
  3. Support communities to identify new program opportunities.
  4. Assist in budget planning.
  5. Lead community program registration of athletes and volunteers.
  6. Train and support volunteers so that they may make the most of their involvement.
  7. Organize communities to attend or host competitive events.
  8. Ensure athlete and volunteer incident reports are resolved and tracked in a timely and effective manner.
  9. Ensure that communities have an annual volunteer appreciation event.
  10. Support communities to submit award nominations for SOA annual awards.
  11. Ensure that communities have the resources to raise the funds needed to sustain their programs.
  12. Work with community leaders to find solutions to challenges that limit Special Olympics growth and development.
  13. Participate as a member of the Community Development Team in various initiatives.
  14. Undertake other and additional duties as delegated and clearly defined by direct supervisor.

Skills that would be beneficial to this role:

  1. Prior experience in Special Olympics community operations.
  2. Experience managing projects or people or a combination of both is an asset.
  3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to make appropriate and timely decisions within authority.
  4. Experience managing budgets is an asset.
  5. Ability to manage priorities and balance deadline-driven workload.
  6. Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
  7. Strong computer skills and advanced user of Microsoft suite including Teams.
  8. Confidence with change.

This position will require you to work evenings and weekends, and there will be travel throughout your assigned region and Alberta. A valid AB driver’s license and vehicle are required.
