The Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH)’s Visitor Experience Program provides cultural information, interpretation, and education services to visitors exploring Canada's Capital Region. By joining the program, you will gain:

1. Knowledge: Through our comprehensive training on Canadian history and cultural heritage, you will deepen your understanding of Canada's rich past and its significance to both Canadians and international visitors.

2. Customer service skills: You will enhance your customer service skills as you adapt to different visitors' needs and preferences.

3. Language proficiency: You will improve or refine your second language skills (English or French) as you provide services in both official languages.

4. Public speaking skills: You will improve or perfect your public speaking skills as you engage with large groups. You will develop confidence in conveying information effectively to captivate and educate your audience.

5. Personal and professional growth: You will develop both personally and professionally as you contribute to a vital cultural and educational mission. Moreover, there are many opportunities to continue within the government after an FSWEP contract.

What you will do

As a cultural ambassador for Canada's Capital Region, you will:

  • Work in an inclusive, dynamic, and creatively stimulating environment.
  • Engage with visitors from around the world at various historically significant sites.
  • Interpret the importance of landmarks through the lens of Canada's rich history.
  • Answer visitors’ questions and recommend experiences in the Capital Region and surrounding areas.
  • Convey information fluently in both official languages, English and French.
  • Lead guided tours for schools and for the public.

To excel in these responsibilities, you will receive comprehensive training in our programs, interpretation techniques, and customer service. The training will also help you develop your public speaking and presentation skills.

Be prepared to work outdoors 95% of the time, in various weather conditions, from very hot days to rain.

Your job will consist of:

  • 50% visitor services such as answering questions from visitors.
  • 30% providing interpretation of different monuments and important sites (National War Memorial, Centennial Flame).
  • 10% giving public tours.
  • 10% participating in special events (Canada Day, Changing of the Guard ceremony).

Duration: Full-time job during the summer season from April 29th to September 2, 2024. Possibility to be rehired part-time during the 2024-2025 academic year.

What we are looking for

Post-secondary students who:

  • Are willing to learn: An interest for continuous learning is essential, as Canada’s Capital Region is rich in history, culture, and heritage.
  • Have interpersonal and communication skills: These skills are crucial for creating meaningful connections with visitors and providing clear information.
  • Are adaptable: This job is performed in various environments and requires adaptability. Canada’s Capital Region welcomes a diversity of visitors. The guide should be able to tailor their tours and interpretations to diverse groups.

Who can apply?

You are eligible if you meet the following criteria:

  • You areregistered in an undergraduate or college program.
  • Meet the required language proficiency: Fluently bilingual in French and English.

Note: Preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Conditions of employment

Successful candidates must be prepared to:

  • Obtain and maintain a personnel security status (reliability status). Canadian Heritage will guide you through the security clearance process.
  • Wear and maintain a provided uniform.
  • Work a 37.5h/week variable schedule including weekends and holidays.
  • Work overtime (as required).
  • Work in outdoor locations in various weather conditions.
  • Perform certain physical tasks, for example standing for prolonged periods, carrying a work bag, and lifting heavy objects.

Additional requirements

Candidates must pay for any travel expenses incurred to attend assessments, such as in-person interviews. No relocation expenses will be reimbursed if a successful candidate moves as the result of an offer of student employment. No commuting expenses will be reimbursed.
