What You’ll Be Doing

Operating under a national mandate, the Leveraged Finance team provides solutions such as mezzanine financing, acquisition financing, and other structured financings to mid-market clients in a diversified set of Canadian industries.

CIBC Leveraged Finance is a team of professionals and support staff with expertise in senior and subordinated cash-flow lending to Canadian middle-market businesses. The team has a three-pronged mandate: i) providing national coverage of private equity sponsors; ii) leading financing of highly-structured, event-based transactions; and iii) providing ongoing support to our existing client base. Our focus is on providing our clients creative financing solutions, value-added ideas, and industry-leading quality service by delivering the full suite of CIBC’s product offerings to clients.

As an Associate, Leveraged Finance, you will partner with other Leveraged Finance team members and independently to prepare and assist in presentations of financing proposals to clients and prospective clients; for accepted credit proposals, assist with credit memo preparation, negotiations, review of legal documents, and closing of transactions; as well as assist in the portfolio management of the existing loan book.

This position will be located in the Toronto office, primarily covering a portfolio of clients and evaluating new opportunities within Canada.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Details on your work arrangement (proportion of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of your interview. How You’ll Succeed
  • Client First – You will attend discussions with client management (executive, financial, and operational) to assess client’s financing needs. Perform comprehensive financial/non-financial analysis and risk assessment of credit proposals. Assist in preparation of financing proposals (structuring terms and conditions including security, covenants, and pricing) to properly reflect and compensate CIBC for assessed risk. Prepare draft recommendations on credit submissions and investment proposals to present to senior management. Assist with comprehensive due diligence on all transactions.
  • Relationship Building – Develop good relations with internal customers, external customers, and general industry contacts to generate new referrals and business opportunities and to maintain a window on the market.
  • Collaboration - Partner with your team to connect clients with opportunities. Monitor and supervise a portfolio of senior and subordinated debt accounts. Manage relationships with borrowers and Relationship Managers. Monitor account performance and industry trends. Maintain a proactive approach to continuous risk assessment and report observations. Assist in negotiation of terms and conditions of proposals.
  • Business acumen. You have working knowledge of commercial lending, including a focus on specialized senior and subordinated lending products (i.e., structured/acquisition financings, project financings, loan syndication) and other CIBC group core products and services. Knowledge of business, legal, tax, banking, and regulatory framework affecting financial requirements of customers. You have strong written and verbal communication skills to present financial information to clients.
Who You Are
  • You have a BBA or similar undergraduate degree. Other financial education is considered an asset (i.e. MBA, CA, CBV, CMA, CFA, etc.) but not necessary.
  • You have experience in a commercial credit and/or equity investment environment. You understand lending principles, procedures and practices, credit assessment and structuring, and industry and competitive analysis. Strong financial modeling and accounting skills are an asset.
  • You have experience assembling proposals and making recommendations.
  • You are a strong communicator. You have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • You have strong organizational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and you live our values – trust, teamwork, and accountability.
What CIBC Offers
  • At CIBC, your goals are a priority. We start with your strengths and ambitions as an employee and strive to create opportunities to tap into your potential. We aspire to give you a career, rather than just a paycheck.
  • We work to recognize you in meaningful, personalized ways including a competitive salary, incentive pay, banking benefits, a health benefits program, defined benefit pension plan, an employee share purchase plan, and MomentMakers, our social, points-based recognition program.
  • Our spaces and technological toolkit will make it simple to bring together great minds to create innovative solutions that make a difference for our clients.
  • We cultivate a culture where you can express your ambition through initiatives like Purpose Day; a paid day off dedicated for you to use to invest in your growth and development.
