Job Synopsis

This position assists the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches (CCMBC) in preserving, describing, and making accessible its congregational and institutional records at the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies (CMBS) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Salary employee, part time, three days per week (22.5 hours/week)

Supervision

This position reports to Cam Stuart, Executive Director, CCMBC.

Qualifications

Essential:

• Post-secondary degree/diploma or equivalent education.

• Articulated interest in history, especially church history and specifically Mennonite history.

• Demonstrated computer skills and ability to use applications and programs including Microsoft Office, Access database, and Adobe Acrobat.

• Technical ability to enter/update data on CMBS website, execute a mail merge in Microsoft Word, interpret a financial statement of operations, and scan photos & slides.

• Demonstrated attention to detail, organization, recordkeeping, and proofreading.

• Strong relational and research skills, needed for tracking down information requested by denominational leaders, church members, visitors to the archives, and email queries, all in a timely manner.

• Ability to take direction and then work independently without supervision.

Employment eligibility:

• Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Preferred:

• Someone pursuing library science or archival science degree.

• Someone with knowledge of specific databases, including MAID (Mennonite Archival Information Database), GRanDMA (Genealogical Registry and Database of Mennonite Ancestry, and GAMEO (Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online).

• Someone with experience editing a WordPress website.

• Someone with basic German language skills.

Key Responsibilities

Specific Tasks and Duties:

• Process donations of records from CCMBC churches and institutions, using standard Rules for Archival Description (RAD), and then posting to the online finding aid on CMBS website.

• Manage the CMBS webpage updates—periodicals, donations of records from churches.

• Manage the Access data base of used books for sale.

• Download bulletins and newsletters and save a sampling to CMBS drive.

• Scan and edit photos for publication to MAID.

• Initiate annual CCMBC statistical survey with provincial church leaders.

• Collate the annual CCMBC yearbook and post to website.

• Manage CMBS budget (get sign off from supervisor for expenditures).

• Write annual reports for Mennonite Historical Society of Canada and the Mennonite Brethren Historical Commission.

• Travel to annual meetings of Mennonite Historical Society of Canada and the Mennonite Brethren Historical Commission.

• Participate in various Mennonite studies initiatives (e.g., Friesen lecture committee at Canadian Mennonite University, editorial board of the Journal of Mennonite Studies at the University of Winnipeg, archives committee of the Mennonite Historical Society of Canada).

• Maintain accreditation with the Association of Manitoba Archives.

• Consult with CMBS advisory committee regarding complex or unfamiliar tasks.

• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Activity/Demands:

• Constantly remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.

• Occasionally moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another.

• Occasionally doing light work that includes moving objects up to 10 Kg.

• Constantly repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

• Constantly assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.

• Not regularly exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
