The Richmond Olympic Oval is a breathtaking venue on the banks of the Fraser River. Located in the City of Richmond, a culturally diverse and geographically unique community centrally located on Canada's West Coast, in Metro Vancouver. The Richmond Olympic Oval is an international centre of excellence for sports, health and wellness, culture and entertainment used by members of our community and those seeking to wear the maple leaf on the international stage.

We are looking for a Head Coach - Community Sports to join our amazing team This is temporary part-time role – 36 hours per week – for 18 months. As the Head Coach you will ensure the development and delivery of World Class programs and camps to nearly 10,000 participants per year. Our programs and camps use the long-term athlete development model and focus on building fundamental movements for ages 3-15 years old. The position will provide leadership, training, ice/ court instruction and coaching support to the instructor team. You will oversee the structure, execution and enhancement of all existing programs and camps and will have the opportunity to create new ones A large focus of this position will be our seasonal Learn to Skate programs and camps. This will include an emphasis on staff management, administrative duties and communication skills with clients. Your goal will be to provide the best programs and camps in the lower mainland

Duties

  • Responsible for overseeing the safe and progressive instruction of programs and camps based on the objectives of the specific programs as well as Long Term Athlete Development Model/Sport for Life
  • Manage training and daily schedules for the instructor team, ensuring the highest standards of delivery are met (enthusiasm, customer service, passion, communication, etc.)
  • Participate in the planning and execution of engaging and progressive training sessions for a staff of 60+ employees
  • Conduct seasonal evaluations for instructors and provide specific feedback on performance and areas for improvement
  • Promote programs and communicate program/camp goals and sport pathways to the Oval community at promotional events
  • Complete day-to-day administrative tasks (complete schedules, generate class lists, fill out report cards, communicate with clients)
  • Be readily available and eager to substitute for any instructor during designated shift
  • Identify problems; provide solutions to continually enhance the program and departmental experience. Complex issues will be relayed to the Sport Programmer or Camps Programmer
  • Provide input and recommendations to the Sport Programmer or Camps Programmer regarding program operations and overall team functionality
  • Execute all programming and planning in accordance to the annual budget
  • Book, promote and maintain relationships with private lesson clients
  • Create facility schedules and camp descriptions for camps
  • Plan and book field trips and buses for off site camps
  • Research and order equipment for camps and programs
  • Track staff first aid certifications
  • Coordinate and plan photo/video shoots with the marketing team for camps and programs
  • Plan, organize and hand out certificates for camps
  • Communicating with sport contractors
  • Ensuring consistency of quality instruction across all programs and camps
  • Oversee private lesson schedules, communicate schedules to parents and collect payments
  • Maintain a high standard of customer engagement by establishing strong customer relationships with all stakeholders to enhance their overall program or camp experience
  • Providing customers with up-to-date program/camp information – no class days, parking notices, class cancelations etc.
  • Ensure instructors are completing designated maintenance tasks during scheduled programs/camps
  • Champion program policies including refunds and late registration
  • Perform other tasks as deemed necessary by the Community Sport department. 

Qualifications

  • Experience delivering high quality, progressive instruction to athletes ages 3 to 15
  • Knowledge of (and the ability to instruct) fundamental movement skills in a court setting
  • Sound background and knowledge in skating is preferred. Additional knowledge in Hockey, Figure Skating, or Speed Skating is an asset
  • Staff management experience is an asset
  • Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot with quick decision-making capabilities
  • Must be able to successfully complete a criminal record check
  • Standard First Aid Certificate is required
  • Completion of, or in progress of completing the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is an asset
  • Basic computer knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Excel and Word is an asset
  • Other Sport experience is an asset.

  • Safe Sport education is a requirement of the role which you must complete within 3 months of start date if you are the successful candidate.

Availability: This role is primarily Monday to Friday daytime and is eligible for a flexible work arrangement. Some evenings and weekends may be required during peak programming periods. During winter break, spring break and summer (July and August) applicants should be available during daytime camp hours from 8am-4pm.

Compensation Range

  • $22.02 - $27.52 per hour
