The Sport Instructor, Speed Skating (Short Track Summer Camp) position is open to club instructors/coaches currently working with Child and Youth-aged category athletes, who are interested in gaining more coaching experience over the summer. This is a great opportunity for promising coaches in the lower mainland to work with knowledgeable, high performance coaching staff.  

In this role, you will be responsible for assisting with summer camp program delivery for Child and Youth-aged speed skating athletes from July 1 to July 6, 2024. Your role involves refining technical skills, and fostering a healthy, holistic team culture among the athletes. You will work closely with coaching staff to provide fun activities, effective instruction, and coaching feedback to help the athletes elevate their skill level.

As the Sport Instructor, Speed Skating (Short Track Summer Camp), you will have a passion for speed skating and experience coaching Child and Youth athletes at the club level in a way that is in line with Speed Skating Canada’s standards and curriculum.This position assists the Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach with delivery of on-ice speed skating programs and activities.This position provides growth and coaching development opportunities for instructors/coaches who are at the Fundamental or Intro to Comp coach certification level or are actively working towards either of these certification s.

Camp Description:

The Club  Development and Podium Prospects Camp is open to intermediate club-level Child and Youth-aged speed skaters between 10 to 14 years of age who are currently competing at the local or provincial level. The goal of the camp is to provide opportunities for speed skaters to train and improve on their speed skating skills during the summer months. In addition to ice time twice a day, camp training will include general strength-building, classroom sessions, a session in our RIDE (cycling) studio, and an opportunity to practice racing on Saturday.

During the second half of each camp day, participants will focus on Olympic values including teamwork and respect for others. Camp athletes will get to enjoy our Olympic Experience Museum and learn about the history and magic of the Olympic Games with Olympic and Team Canada themed activities.

Job Summary and Examples of Work: 

1. Provides coaching to ensure that participants are learning and performing in a safe environment as per safe sport standards.

2. Responsible for following and providing technical support during on ice sessions and other activities led by Camp Coaches.

3. Ensure participants are engaged by creating progressive instruction, skill-building, and educational experience during lessons through games and drills that are safe and level appropriate.

4. Demonstrates clear communication techniques to participants in a professional manner.

5. Provides verbal feedback to camp athletes during on ice programs.

6. Provides conflict resolution and enforces program rules pertaining to safety.

7. Provides first aid to participants that are injured during programs.

Qualifications:

● Successful completion of Grade 12.

● NCCP Development Coach Certified (level 1) or higher.

● At minimum, working towards Fundamentals Coaching Certification.

● Proven experience in providing speed skating instruction at the club level.

● Experience working with youth.

● Must have a background and knowledge in speed skating and sport instruction.

● Valid First Aid and CPR-C/AED certificates

● Respect in Sport Training

● Rule of 2 Training

Compensation:

$20.29-$26.27 - plus 12% in lieu of benefits (hourly rate is based on qualifications and experience)

Schedule: Must be available July 1-6, 2024 . Monday 8am to 4pm, Tuesday-Friday 8am to 1pm, Saturday 8am to 1:30pm. Available for a 2-hour meeting the week prior to the camp.
