The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (Blusson QMI) at the University of British Columbia is a world-leading venture into research of systems and phenomena explicitly involving quantum mechanics that consists of physicists, chemists, and engineers, with strong and active partnerships with world-leading institutions. The Sr. Scientist R&D Nanofabrication is a highly motivated and skilled individual in charge of nanofabrication of quantum devices, primarily multi-quantum-dot based quantum circuits using Ge heterostructures for the group of Principal Investigator Joe Salfi and his collaborators. Sr. Scientist R&D Nanofabrication will contribute to writing and publishing research project results, attend conferences and workshops to gather and disseminate research results in high-impact publications, and participate in multi-year roadmapping activities at a yearly program review. With others in Salfi’s team, the Sr. Scientist R&D Nanofabrication will contribute to coordination of research, preparation of reports, and organization of a yearly review. The candidate will work on-site at UBC.
Organizational StatusThe Sr. Scientist R&D Nanofabrication reports to Project Principal Investigator Joe Salfi and formally to the Blusson QMI Scientific Director Andrea Damascelli. The incumbent makes decisions regarding planning and implementation of research projects.
Work Performed- R&D engineering/management activities
- Fabrication of gate-defined multi-quantum dot devices and quantum dot circuits using Ge heterostructure materials.
- Cryogenic experimental evaluation of the fabricated quantum devices to improve the nanofabrication process.
- Interacts with a team of graduate students and postdocs investigating the performance of quantum circuits.
- Contributes to managing organization of a yearly program review, progress reports and grants, and liaising with project partners.
Supervision Received: Works independently, in consultation with the Scientific Director and Principal Investigator and other faculty members. Is called upon to use unique and highly advanced technical knowledge to resolve complex scientific and technical problems that have not been previously encountered and do not have established methods, principles or guidelines to follow for resolution - develops these as necessary and documents the process.
Supervision Given: Provides advice to Principal Investigator, postdocs, and graduate students on the development of new nanofabrication processes.
Qualifications- PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Track record of publications involving the nanofabrication of classical and/or quantum devices.
- Working knowledge and hands-on experience using electron-beam lithography for fabrication of classical and/or quantum devices.
- Working knowledge and hands-on experience including photolithography, resist processing, wet and dry etching, physical vapor deposition, and sputtering.
- Demonstrated ability to creatively solve nanofabrication engineering problems.
- Demonstrated teamwork qualities.
