Public Affairs Specialist

- Actively monitor local and provincial media for dairy and agriculture related content.
- Support the Director of Public Affairs in providing issues management advice to dairy producers, regional dairy associations and dairy industry partner organizations as required.
- Contribute written materials to BC Dairy campaigns and digital platforms.
- Provide support with media relations and issues management.
- Support the Director of Public Affairs in delivering media coaching for senior leaders as spokespeople.
- Work closely with Dairy Farmers of Canada and other partner organizations to coordinate issues response where appropriate.
- Liaison between producers, government response organizations, national dairy associations, and other relevant industry partners.
- Assist with the development of policy position papers and briefing notes.
- Support government advocacy strategy development and implementation at local and provincial levels.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of government policies or regulations and programs at the provincial and local level that could affect the dairy industry.
- Maintain a database of local, provincial and federal government contacts, track engagement and deliver quarterly reports.
- Assist with booking government meetings, including planning lobby days and managing on-the-ground logistics for staff and participating producers.
- Help manage federal lobby participation, including meeting procurement, event planning and oversight of logistics.
- Monitor government channels to ensure BC Dairy is aware of government policies, programs and consultations pertaining to the interests of farmers.
- 3-5 years of experience in public affairs/government relations
- Relevant degree/diploma and proficiency in English
- Familiarity with BC government decision-making process
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Experience in project management and strong organizational skills to ensure effective delivery of initiatives and programs
- Ability to exercise mature judgment, initiative and independence in accomplishing priorities and meeting deadlines
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for occasional travel within the Lower Mainland (mileage will be compensated)
