JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Intake/Assessment Counsellor position is one of the team members of the Intake service responsible for providing assessment, support, and clinical direction on all incoming referrals for all Nodin services. They will conduct intake assessments, provide additional clinical assessment, crisis intervention, safety planning, harm reduction education to pending clients as required. The Clinical Intake/Assessment Counsellor works in close collaboration with all community resources and develops strong working relationships with all referral sources. They work alongside the intake team and in collaboration with the other Nodin Mental Health Counsellors.

The Clinical Intake/Assessment Counsellor will report to the Intake Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
• Minimum level of education required is equivalent to high school graduation and completion of a diploma training program, specific to mental health or equivalent education at a recognized college.
• Registration with the College of Psychotherapy or College of Social Workers or another recognized professional college is a requirement prior to or within a year of commencing employment.
• Must have at least 5 years of recent experience working with children, adolescents and/or families in a mental health clinical capacity.
• A related university degree is an asset.
• Addictions related courses an asset.
• Very strong interviewing skills with clients, and experience as an intake counsellor is a definite asset.
• Must have very effective time management skills.
• Can function very efficiently in a fast-paced and multi-tasking environment, calm under pressure.
• Self-starter, analytical, problem solving capability and ability to work under minimal supervision is absolutely necessary.
• Must have experience assessing high risk clients and responding appropriately (e.g., duty to report).
• Certification in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills is an asset.
• Extensive knowledge of community resources or a willingness to learn.
• Understanding of crisis intervention and trauma informed care preferred.
• Excellent time management skills to effectively maintain a very busy schedule.
• Must be very confident to speak to clients and referral sources very frequently.
• Strong set of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain rapport effectively with clients and partners.
• Proficient in typing and competent in the use of computers.
• Must be able to use an electronic medical record.
• Must complete all client documentation requirements and understand there can be no delay.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy is an absolute must.
• Must follow or assist with development of standard clinical operating procedures.
• Knowledge of the people, culture and mental health priorities of First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout region.
• Ability to communicate in one or more of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout region will be an asset.
• Previous experience working with First Nations communities an asset.
• The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• To receive all referrals from Intake Workers who initially receive all referrals (who have made sure referrals are completed thoroughly).
• To prioritize referrals/requests based on safety, date received and crisis situations, determining the best service to match for the client.
• Confirming with an individual that they are interested in service and explaining services.
• Conducts intakes which include assessing client, their personal, social and mental health needs and safety, and their needs and goals for counselling.
• Provides client-centered, trauma informed brief phone support if required before entry to a service.
• Upon completion of intake, collaborate with Nodin’s team to make a smooth transition of care, including attending case reviews as necessary.
• Maintain accurate, factual, and objective typewritten records in a timely manner on all aspects of clinical care.
• Protect client confidentiality, secure all records and maintain integrity of client records.
• Follow duty to report requirements, as necessary.
• Receive training that is applicable to this position.
• Handling of sensitive/confidential material strictly in confidence in accordance with office policy/PIPEDA/PHIPA.
• May have to travel with future development of Nodin.
• Other duties as assigned by the Immediate Supervisor.
