Job Description

Our Active Equities mandate is to deliver alpha in the global public equity markets. The team leverages CPP Investments structural competitive advantages and Active Equities sources of edge to exploit alpha opportunities through proprietary company specific fundamental research. Our fundamental insights yield a collection of high-conviction, single-company investments that are assembled into a highly concentrated long/short, market-neutral portfolio via an optimization process that aims to remove unintended factor exposures. The result is a portfolio with maximum exposure to our proprietary research and little else.

The Managing Director, AE North America will report into the Managing Director, Head of AE North America. The Managing Director will be responsible for managing the group’s North American Software portfolio.

Role-Specific Accountabilities

  • Accountable for the financial performance of the Active Equities North American Software portfolio
  • Execute the fundamental research process with excellence, including idea generation, identifying key investment debates, developing and executing a research plan, and ultimately making security selection and position sizing decisions
  • Manage the North American Software portfolio in accordance with Active Equities Portfolio Construction Guidelines
  • Oversee the recruitment, management, and development of junior fundamental researchers

Team Leadership

  • Build and manage a dedicated sector team with a focus on talent development
  • Drive accountability for investment decisions
  • Lead by example to foster a culture of inclusion
  • Leverage the knowledge, skills and network of other internal groups at CPP Investments

External Representation and Department Leadership

  • Represent CPP Investments externally and be an active communicator of the organization’s Active Equities strategies and objectives
  • Interact with the company boards, management teams, equity research analysts, other sell-side advisors, and industry experts, as appropriate to advance the Active Equities Strategy
  • Participate in and contribute to department management and investment committee meetings
  • Provide timely information on key Active Equities activities
  • Assist in firm-wide training and recruitment efforts

Qualifications

  • A strong investment track record, with requisite investment industry experience within the Technology/Software sector in North America
  • Ability to interact with C-suite level executives and experience in boardroom situations
  • Ability to work on a global team in a matrix environment
  • Experience with long-term investments, in a concentrated portfolio and fundamental analysis of public equities
  • Exceptional financial statement analysis skills and a firm foundation in finance, maths / statistics and economics, along with the ability to link company / industry specifics to valuation considerations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior interpersonal and relationship management skills, with excellent abilities as a communicator (oral and written) and as a presenter
  • Demonstrable teambuilding and collaboration skills
  • Strong character oriented towards being self-motivated, flexible and adaptable
  • Able to travel extensively in North America.
  • A low ego with a desire to work in a collaborative, collegial culture focused on high performance
  • Ability to act as an enterprise standard bearer of CPP Investments’ Guiding Principles of Integrity, Partnership and High Performance
