The HSE Advisor is located in Ottawa. Their primary focus is to oversee job sites to ensure compliance with company, client, and government policies, procedures, acts and regulations. The HSE Advisor will ensure proper application and use of Black & McDonald’s Safety Management System. This position will demonstrate leadership in order to drive safety as a core value. Training will be provided.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide HS&E leadership, guidance, and support to assigned workplace (s)
  • Conduct inspections (as required) of job sites, facilities, and equipment for compliance with general and specific safety standards; follow-up on any non-compliance issues and take appropriate action to remedy
  • Conduct incident investigations, audits of subcontractor safety management systems, and non-compliance issues, prepare reports and make recommendations for changes as necessary
  • Share feedback, observations and reporting details related to regional HS&E achievements and opportunities with regional managers, people leaders and Corporate HSE
  • Support as required modified duty programs
  • Participate in regional planning as required
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and practices regarding health, safety and environment
  • Conduct and/or support the annual HSE Management System Audit (internal and external)
  • Develop and maintain regional safe work practices and job procedures
  • Participate with project or site JHSC, Weekly Safety Meetings, and Project Management meeting as required
  • Liaise with MOL, MOE, WSIB, and other government agencies as required

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor's degree or college diploma in a discipline such as Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Studies would be preferred.

The following certifications/designations are considered an asset

  • Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC)
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
  • Construction Safety Training, First Aid & CPR & any additional safety certifications

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years of related work experience within the construction industry

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge and understanding of:
  • A strong communicator, both in writing and spoken communications
  • Organized, a self-starter and an inspirational leader of your team
  • Ability to present to groups
  • Working knowledge of Provincial, and Local safety and environmental regulations and programs
  • Ability to obtain and hold security clearance
  • Valid Driver’s License

Intermediate user of:

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Project and Outlook)
