Summary of responsibilities

Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) is an acute care hospital located in Cornwall, Ontario along the scenic St. Lawrence River. CCH provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient and community mental health services to a catchment area of 100,000 people from the communities of Cornwall, the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry and to the Mohawk community of Akwesasne.

With 186 beds, 1350 employees and 180 physicians, CCH offers a wide range of care and services. These include emergency, surgical, medicine and rehabilitation services, mental health and addiction programs as well as a family birthing centre.

CCH is just completing the initial phase of a five-year strategic plan, Leading Innovative Transformation, and is a seeking a Vice-President, Community Programs to play a key role in executing the plan. Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, and as a member of the senior management team, the Vice President (VP) Community Programs will play a key strategic role within the organization and community. The VP Community Programs will ensure that CCH is actively engaged and providing strong leadership to improve health outcomes, as per provincial directions aimed at evolving Ontario's healthcare system to a population-health model. This position will provide leadership across Community Addiction and Mental Health services to ensure that program planning and delivery results in a smooth continuum of care for clients and family caregivers. The VP Community Programs will work closely with clinical leaders to oversee the implementation of best practices and will facilitate enhanced collaboration with key external agencies to promote knowledge exchange for improved quality of addiction and mental health services. As a member of the Senior Administration Team, the VP Community Programs will also contribute to the planning and review of strategic plans and the annual operating and quality improvement plans. The VP, Community programs may also represent senior administration in communication with the Board of Directors and medical staff and contribute to various committees and working groups as required.

A successful candidate will be an exceptional leader who is collaborative, approachable and results oriented. An in-depth and demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario health care system, evidence-based standards of care, and operations is essential for ensuring high standards of practice are set and maintained for programs, and operations across the Community Addiction and Mental Health Services portfolio.

Requirements of the job

The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, experience and academic preparation:
  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. nursing, social work, health administration, business administration)
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive, and related leadership experience at the senior- management level
  • Registered in good standing with a regulatory college (College of Nurses of Ontario or Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers)
  • Demonstrated ability to provide senior executive leadership in a complex organization with a diverse stakeholder group
  • Experience defining, communicating and enabling a vision with the ability to translate long-term vision into organizational reality
  • Proven ability to deliver on transformational change and comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity
  • Demonstrated team building skills, and previous success with interdisciplinary relationship building that encourages employees to utilize creative solutions to apply new ideas and new ways of thinking
  • Superior communication skills, including experience working with diverse and influential groups
  • Ability to synthesize knowledge, insights and technical expertise into strategic advice which informs policy, planning and program design
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Standards of Practice and relevant legislations, including the Public Hospitals Act, Mental Health Act, Accreditation Canada Standards, the Regulated Health Professionals Act, the Excellent Care for All Act, and the Broader Public Sector Accountability Act.
