Working in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Care - Day, the Assistant Director of Care - Evening (ADOC-E) is accountable to the Director of Care for the day-to-day management of the nursing department and resident care services. Through effective management of all resources in the nursing envelope and development of a strong nursing team, the ADOC-E will ensure the delivery of optimal care and service, based on legislative requirements and MHC's standards.

The ADOC-E is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Meighen Health Centre's core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services provided to the residents.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Envisions and shapes the long-term vision and strategy of the Care Function at Meighen Health Centre to fulfill the ministry's Mission
  • In the Director of Care's absence, shares responsibility for the nursing department and care provided to residents with the ADOC-D
  • In coordination with ADOC-D assists Director of Care in managing over 100 direct and indirect reports
  • A hands-on leader: a member of management team in planning, implementation, and evaluation of facility-wide quality improvement/risk management activities
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This is a permanent full time position based on 80 hours biweekly working 2:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
  • This role is in a seniors congregate setting and may be subject to working in outbreak (COVID, flu, etc.) conditions
  • May work with residents who are physically or cognitively impaired
  • Interacts with families, staff, and volunteers
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • BScN, current Certificate of Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario or willingness to upgrade RPN designation to RN designation within a defined timeframe, and current CPR designation
  • 3 years in a senior nursing leadership role including program planning, education, critical analysis, union, accreditation, and budgeting experience
  • 1 year experience as an RN in gerontological nursing; over 5 years progressive Nursing experience
  • Solid skills and experience in MS Office, resident records, staffing programs, and RAI MDS
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Current knowledge of issues and trends including best practices in nursing and best practices in the enhancement of quality of work life
  • Knowledge of current quality improvement and risk management concepts and approaches with special emphasis on infection control, wound management and the prevention of resident falls and medication errors and least restraint policies
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with residents, resident's families, visitors and staff in a positive manner
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity, sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership, including experience with setting and achieving strategy, goals, and objectives; budget control, problem solving, conflict resolution and effective human and fiscal resource management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to mentor and develop staff
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary communication in complex care issues to foster positive resident outcomes
  • Establish and sustain care in a manner that is resident centred and fosters evidence based best practice
  • Demonstrated commitment to a resident-centered leadership style
  • Demonstrated commitment to treating others with respect and dignity
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development
  • Focus on a collaborative team approach with all managers and staff and create a working climate that is positive and mutually supportive
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
