Economic Development – Student Researcher (CONTRACT)

The Chiefs of Ontario is inviting applications for the position of Economic Development Researcher (part time). The researcher will be under the direction of the Economic Development Director and work directly with the Project Lead. The main priorities of the role will focus on assisting in verifying data sets part of a study of Supply Chain Mapping and Procurement for First Nation business. Our ideal candidate will have strong research, speaking and writing skills, enjoy working as a team and has the ability to work independently and be comfortable with placing calls to verify data and contacts.

Location:Hybrid with In person option of Toronto (Chiefs of Ontario offices) – Ottawa (Institute of Fiscal Studies and Democracy Offices)

Project Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research, data collection, and analysis of First Nation business across Ontario.
  • Data and listing verification for the supply chain directory and map via phone call and online public information research
  • Coordinate and actively participate during staff meetings, including the weekly updates and working group meetings.
  • Support project by assisting in planning, research and co-ordination.
  • Assist the Economic Development sector with communications relevant to Ontario First Nations.
  • Prepare reports and research outcome reports with detailed information
  • Develop and maintain a data base of verified contact and businesses
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Travel might be required.
  • Priority will be given to First Nations candidates
  • Familiarity or willingness to with OCAP principles and certification thereof.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, political science, policy, or other relevant field.
  • Experience in building data bases and contact lists is an asset.
  • General knowledge of the organization and activities of the Chiefs of Ontario and current events related to First Nations in Ontario.
  • Knowledge of First Nation traditions, cultures and values; understand the history and relationship between First Nations and the Crown is an asset.
  • Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
  • Political acuity is a strong asset.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal.
  • Time management, organization and planning skills.

DURATION:20 hours – 12 weeks starting immediately – during March 2024 to June 2024
