Job Title: Environmental Specialist Location: Medicine Hat Employment Type: Permanent, Full-time Job Description: The City of Medicine Hat is seeking an experienced environmental professional to join the Environmental Strategy and Compliance team. The successful candidate will assist in the development, planning, and execution of environmental programs, priorities, and initiatives to ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements and legislation. About Us: The City of Medicine Hat is a dynamic organization engaged in various sectors that require environmental support, including land development, municipal utility distribution, electric generation, airport operations, landfill management, and upstream oil and gas industries. The role also encompasses traditional municipal functions. Role Overview: As our Environmental Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our operations align with environmental regulations and best practices. Your responsibilities will include managing diverse environmental projects, obtaining necessary approvals, and collaborating with regulatory bodies. Additionally, you will provide technical expertise, manage environmental assessments, and oversee mitigation measures. Responsibilities:
  1. Develop, plan, and execute environmental programs and initiatives.
  2. Ensure compliance with provincial and federal environmental policies and legislation.
  3. Conduct and evaluate biophysical assessments and wetland surveys.
  4. Obtain construction and regulatory approvals and notifications for project construction and site access.
  5. Collaborate with regulatory bodies on various environmental issues.
  6. Manage contaminated sites and interpret environmental reports and regulatory requirements.
  7. Lead change management strategies and contribute to corporate efficiencies.
  8. Prepare and submit regulatory reports and approvals.
  9. Experience with environmental and air emissions related regulatory reporting for industrial plants and/or aggregate facilities, air emissions calculations and/or environmental audits considered an asset.
  10. Supervise contractors and oversee project budgets and timelines.
  11. Interpret environmental data and present findings to stakeholders.
Qualifications:
  1. Post-secondary degree or diploma in an environmental-related discipline.
  2. Environmental professional designation in Alberta is an asset.
  3. Five (5) years of relevant work experience.
  4. Valid Class 5 Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  5. Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  7. Experience with environmental management systems is desirable.
