How Oncology Registered Nurses (RN) support our teams at Grand River Hospital:

The Oncology nurse will be involved in all aspects of the oncology program, including patient/family assessment, teaching and administering chemotherapy, and providing supportive and palliative care. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the oncology nurse will participate in the development and implementation of patient treatment plans and quality improvement processes, and will support education and research initiatives. Contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Support and promote collaborative team practices. Our Oncology RNs also:

  • Utilize evidence-based practices and analysis of outcomes to identify opportunities for improvement and promote professional accountability.
  • Act as role models to our nursing and support team members.
  • Effectively manage unit resources.
  • Consult with our multidiscipline teams to ensure our patients receive the highest level of care and support.

At Grand River Hospital, our Oncology Registered Nurses (RNs) have:

  • Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Completion of Oncology Foundations Course from the deSouza Institute preferred, but enrollment acceptable.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in IV initiation and Venous Access Device management mandatory.
  • Canadian Nurses Association certification as a Certified Oncology Nurse (CONC) preferred; however, consideration will be given to candidates who are willing to obtain (must be completed within 3 years of hire).
  • Minimum of 1 year recent experience in oncology nursing.
  • Demonstrated experience in working within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Working with a variety of computer systems and software applications.
  • Participation in education and clinical training programs.
  • Knowledge of principles of oncology and adult learning.
  • Therapeutic communication techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge in patient-focused care and the needs of the oncology patient population.
