The Mustard Seed is committed to helping people who are homeless transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. The Food Services - Relief supports the operation of the kitchen in Kamloops and is responsible for providing meal service for clients who are actively participating in programs and community events which may include meals.

Employment Type: Casual
Schedule: As Required, Monday - Sunday, 9:00am - 5:30pm
Reporting to: Food Services Supervisor

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage delivery of a healthy and nutritious meal program including researching nutritional information and creating menus that fit the budget and available donations
  • Carry out necessary food preparation and cooking
  • Ensure cooler and freezer are kept organized
  • Clean all Food Services areas to ensure health and safety standards are met
  • Implement the procedures, standards and policies of the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared, handled and stored
  • Provide information to the Food Services Supervisor regarding kitchen renovations or improvements and repair or maintenance of equipment
  • Identify problem areas and suggest methods to improve overall operations of the kitchen
  • Provide relief coverage in the absence of Food Services Team, to support the day-to-day management of Food Services
  • Provide input and assist in the implementation of program evaluation
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers in the kitchen
  • Implement health and safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment
  • Attend meetings and training as required
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Formal training in Food Services and/or minimum of three (3) years experience working in a commercial kitchen environment
  • Valid Alberta Health Services Food Safe course certificate
  • Experience overseeing volunteers in a kitchen considered a strong asset
  • Must be comfortable cooking all meals from scratch with a lot of fresh food prep
  • Must be willing to work closely with several volunteers and have excellent customer service skills
  • Good organizational skills for menu planning
  • Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise, and adapt to change
  • Ability to adhere to requirement to keep clients’ information confidential, update, and secure
  • Willingness to participate in required training The Mustard Seed (NVCI, First Aid etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Casual position requiring availability to pick up shifts as needed
  • Hands-on position requiring moderate to significant physical effort, extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, climbing, lifting, reaching, carrying (must be able to lift up to 25 to 50 pounds)
  • Position is often fast-paced and demanding, requiring substantial mental effort to analyze information and problem solve, as well as adapt and find create solutions.
  • Daily interactions with colleagues, volunteers and guests required
