Provide leadership in coordinating and fostering relations with Indigenous communities on behalf of LP Building Solutions (LP) in British Columbia. Analyzes and interprets government policies as it relates to Indigenous affairs and evaluates potential impact to the organization's operations. Acts as LP liaison and manages communications directly with Indigenous officials, community members and other agencies. Reviews internal policies, plans, programs to ensure consistency with provincial and federal legislation related to Indigenous affairs. Support and participate in company diversity, equity and inclusion programs in British Columbia and across Canadian operations with a focus on integrating Indigenous perspectives, cultural awareness training and enhancing relationships with Indigenous Peoples.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop Indigenous engagement strategies and plans for the company.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and counsel to Peace Valley and Dawson Creek forestry teams on Indigenous engagement and issues management.
  • Lead or participate in company meetings with Indigenous groups.
  • Identify, track and monitor issues, concerns, and interests identified by Indigenous groups.
  • Advise company on issues related to project developments and assist them in developing solutions and strategies to address those issues, as appropriate.
  • Support the negotiation of agreements between the company and Indigenous groups, as required.
  • Participate in the company’s Indigenous relations strategies, including the identification of mutually beneficial business opportunities/partnerships with Indigenous groups.
  • Build and foster relationships with leaders of Indigenous communities, particularly where LP has existing partnership agreements in place.
  • Effectively collaborate with others in the company to further support and enhance diversity, equity and inclusion programs across operations in Canada.
  • Collaborate with other Canadian operating regions as well as corporate functional groups like Certification and Sustainability to maximize effectiveness and share best practices.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY

  • Demonstrated success in navigating relationships between First Nations and other parties.
  • Advanced knowledge of Indigenous perspectives, gained from working with Indigenous communities and peoples on engagement planning and strategy, regulatory, capacity building, and education/training projects.
  • Working knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), as well as British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA).
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of related federal and provincial legislation and policy.
  • Ability to interface with Elders, leaders and representatives to build strong relationships with various Indigenous groups.
  • Ability to develop and implement engagement and outreach strategies and plans.
  • Advanced skills related to report writing, public speaking, events and meetings, and development of communication materials.
  • Able to work collaboratively and build networks internally and externally.
  • Strong conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem-solving skills including the ability to facilitate respectful dialogue.

EDUCATION

  • Undergraduate Degree, college diploma or professional certification in a related field (e.g., Indigenous Studies, Aboriginal Law, Environmental Management, Economics, Engineering, Accounting, Communications, Public Policy, or a related discipline from a recognized program).
  • In addition to 5+ years of recent, relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years progressive experience in applied Indigenous engagement work within the natural resources industry sector.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Up to 50% travel.
  • Candidate should live or be willing to relocate to the Fort St John or Dawson Creek, BC area.
