What You Will Be Doing

The Director, International Taxation is responsible for providing specialized advice on a broad range of international income tax matters. The role will be responsible for tax planning, providing risk assessment and tax advice to stakeholders across CIBC in respect of strategic initiatives involving cross-border transactions, including establishing operations in new jurisdictions and foreign reorganizations. The Director, International Taxation will provide international tax support to foreign offices of CIBC and will work closely with the Compliance group to ensure that key international transactions are accurately reflected in the quarterly tax provisions and reported on the tax returns and applicable forms (T1134, T106). The Director, International Taxation will also contribute to the development and implementation of the Global Minimum Tax compliance framework.

The Director, International Taxation will join the International Tax and Transfer Pricing team and will report to the Senior Director, International Taxation, who reports to the Senior Vice-President, Taxation.

How you will succeed

  • Tax Planning: You will lead and manage a broad range of tax planning matters pertaining to international cross-border transactions.
  • Strategic Initiatives and Implementation: You will identify and analyze the international tax considerations of proposed transactions, assess and quantify risks. Lead and manage the coordination of tax advice by liaising with Transfer Pricing, Indirect Tax and Domestic Tax Planning and Compliance colleagues.
  • Relationship Management: You will develop relationships and partnerships with stakeholders at all levels within CIBC in order to effectively manage the delivery of tax services, as well as collaborating with external advisors as required.
  • Industry Expert: You will keep abreast of tax legislative and administrative developments in the area of international taxation, assess impact to CIBC and inform relevant stakeholders.

Who you are

  • You have a CPA designation or a Bachelor of Laws degree and have at least 5 or more years of tax experience.
  • You have comprehensive knowledge of Canadian taxation with a specialization on outbound taxation. Completed CPA In-depth International Tax course or Master of Taxation.
  • Having exposure to the financial services industry would be regarded as an asset however, consideration will be given to candidates who have a strong interest and desire to learn the financial services business.
  • You are results-oriented, self-motivated, proactive and proven ability to work independently. Focused, thorough and disciplined in approach.
  • You are decisive, confident and comfortable working closely with and collaborating with business partners.
  • Excellent communication skills and able to translate technical guidance into business terms and implications.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills leading to practical solutions on a broad range of matters.
  • Proficient with Excel and are able to perform scenario modelling. Experience with using tools such as Alteryx and Microsoft Power BI is an asset.
