The Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences (Algoma University, Sault Ste. Marie,
Ontario, Canada) is seeking candidates to work with faculty to develop a bank of
literacy/numeracy quiz questions for three upper-year courses within the Biology and
Environmental Science programs (BIOL4696 - Toxicology, ENVS XXXX Environmental Risk
Assessment, ENVS 3206 Environmental Chemistry). The successful candidate will work from
course materials, as well as a catalog of common grammatical errors/challenges that has
already been created. The successful applicant will be responsible for producing 15 quiz
questions for each of 10 chapters for each course, for a total of 450 questions across the
three courses.
The English and Scientific Literacy Numeracy Quiz Developer will design engaging and
effective assessments focused on English language proficiency and scientific
literacy/numeracy. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of educational principles and a passion for enhancing student learning outcomes through innovative
assessment methods.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify Student Needs: Conduct quiz questions (15 per chapter, 10 chapters per course, three courses) to understand specific weaknesses in English language,
scientific literacy, and numeracy among students. - Integrate Learning: Develop quiz questions in a way that combines language learning with scientific concepts, making them relevant to students' academic disciplines.
- Support Students: Create resources tailored to International/college transfer, and mature students to help them successfully migrate into, and find success in our programs.
- Collaborate with Faculty:Work with faculty to ensure that assessment tools and materials align with course content and learning objectives.
- Enhance Retention Rates: Develop quizzes that help students better learn course content and the means to effectively communicate their knowledge.
- Align with Workforce Needs: Research suggests that business owners find the literacy and numeracy skills of university graduates to be lacking. This work will address this need by creating tools that help students better develop these skills during their degrees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Check
- An undergraduate sciences degree in B.Sc. in Biology or Environmental Science; however, applicants with M.Sc. or Ph.D will be preferred.
- Proficient in written English with a strong understanding of grammar, demonstrated through relevant coursework or professional experience in writing and mathematics.
- Computer literacy and good keyboard skills proficient in using Google Suite (Docs, Sheets and Slides) with file management and cloud software.
- Demonstrated strong work ethic with a track record of reliability and accountability in previous roles.
- Experience in teaching or tutoring university-level science courses is desirable.
- Ability to work independently is a necessity.
