Working for the University of Alberta

The University of Alberta acknowledges that we are located on Treaty 6 territory, and respects the histories, languages and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and all First Peoples of Canada, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community.

The University of Alberta is a community of knowledge seekers, change makers and world shapers who lead with purpose each and every day. We are home to more than 14,000 faculty and staff, over 40,000 students and 260,000 alumni worldwide.

Your work will have a meaningful influence on a fascinating cross-section of people — from our students and community members, to our renowned researchers and innovators, making discoveries and generating solutions that make the world healthier, safer, stronger and more just.

Working for the Department of Psychiatry

The University of Alberta’s Department of Psychiatry has a well-established residency training program in psychiatry, with Royal College accredited sub-specialty training programs in child & adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, and a new sub-specialty training program in geriatric psychiatry that has received provisional Royal College approval. The successful candidate will play a significant role in Medical Education Leadership. In addition to post-graduate residency training, the Department has commitments to education as a part of the MD Program with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, providing both pre-clinical and clinical teaching for core and elective experiences for undergraduate MD students. The successful candidate may also integrate undergraduate medical educational leadership in their position.

AHS is Canada’s first and largest province-wide, fully integrated health system, responsible for delivering health services to the over four million people living in Alberta, as well as to some residents of Saskatchewan, B.C., and the Northwest Territories. Our multi-disciplinary teams in the Edmonton Zone consisting of nursing, psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, social work, education, and speech-language pathology provide education and assistance for more than 1.4 million people in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

At the provincial level, researchers in the Department are working closely with AHS in the context of the Strategic Clinical Network Addiction & Mental Health Integration Network | Alberta Health Services. There is an excellent alignment between the SCNs and the priorities of the provincial health research funding agency (Alberta Innovates Health Solutions).

Working in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Unlike traditional academic positions, AMHSP positions are unique opportunities that allow for the development of a viable academic career in conjunction with a clinical career. Competitively funded protected time for education and/or research is embedded in all AMHSP positions.

Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta jointly oversee the AMHSP. The candidate(s) selected for this position will be referred to the AMHSP Arrangement Management Committee to finalize their yearly individual service agreement, which the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Addiction and Mental Health, Alberta Health Services jointly approved.

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the income scale of the six-step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). Further details about this innovative funding plan are available on request.

The successful candidate will actively participate in medical education and/or research. In addition to post-graduate residency training, the Department has commitments to education as a part of the MD Program with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, providing pre-clinical and clinical teaching for core and elective experiences for undergraduate MD students.

Qualifications

Candidates must have an MD and be certified, or eligible for certification, with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons as a Psychiatrist with subspecialty training and/or designation in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Preference will be given to psychiatrists with previous interest in and/or additional medical education and/or research training. The positions will allow up to 0.5 FTE for medical education or research; the remaining FTE will be clinical services with AHS.

Application Instructions

Interested applicants are invited to apply online by submitting a cover letter, their curriculum vitae, teaching statement, and the names and contact information of three referees, one of whom must be the current supervisor or the most recent supervisor. (kindly submit all documents as one single PDF).

The cover letter should outline the applicant physician’s vision for an AMHSP position in the key pillars of clinical service, education, administration/leadership, and, if desired, research.

To apply, please submit all relevant documents to the Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist- AMHSP (23-AMHSP-PSY-CHILD-RURAL-34) posting on Doctor Jobs: Click Here
