The Student Counsellor supports and coaches learners through both personal and academic concerns. The incumbent will work closely with the other employees at SIIT and refer to internal and external resources when required to ensure learners' needs are being met. The Student Counsellor will provide learners with the assistance and encouragement that is necessary to develop academically and socially in both individual and group settings. The incumbent will work with learners to overcome emotional, social, or behavioral problems, improve organization and time management skills. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.

  • Provide support and guidance to SIIT learners, as well provide referrals to internal and external service providers in order to reduce barriers
  • Be observant and aware of learners that may be experiencing difficulties, create opportunities for open and supportive dialogue, individually or in groups, so learners may express areas of concern and troubles they are facing
  • Implement a wrap-around case management approach while respecting the confidentiality of each case
  • Collaborate and consult with others to develop a learner's success plan
  • Support and maintain positive rapport with faculty and administration
  • Maintain a current database of external service providers
  • Maintain accurate data of services provided to assist and support department requirements, preparing reports and providing support as necessary
  • Ensure strict confidentiality and privacy of information as it relates to learners, employers, the Institute, and other third parties
  • Keep current with respect to techniques, methods and industry trends, and actively seek out professional development opportunities
  • Maintain and research current data on success and wellness coaching strategies and best practice for learners and alumni

Required Qualifications and Experience: A Master's degree in Psychology or Social Work is preferred, however, candidates with a minimum of a related Bachelor's degree plus experience will be considered. Preference will be given to those who are registered with a provincial professional association. Minimum of three years post-graduate experience in the areas of counselling, coupled with experience working with First Nations adults, families and communities. Demonstrated counselling experience in a post-secondary environment would be an asset. Knowledge of Saskatoon community resources would be an asset. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations would be an asset. Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation as travel may be required.

As this position is considered safety sensitive, the incumbent will be subject to testing as per SIIT's Alcohol and Substances policy.


This is a full time, term position.

Term: August 15, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
