This position is funded by the Region of Waterloo Equity Investment Fund. The Harm Reduction Capacity Worker supports the Emergency Shelter and Harm Reduction Integration Initiative (ESHRII) to reduce harms associated with substance use in emergency shelter settings, including opioid-related overdose deaths and their impact on shelter participants and staff, through onsite harm reduction staff and peer-support programs. Harm reduction services and supports for people who are experiencing sheltered homelessness, unsheltered homelessness, or are precariously housed. The capacity building work of the initiative is done in partnership with staff from Sanguen Health Centre and staff from Healing of the Seven Generations.

ACCKWA is an AIDS Service Organization with a 35+ year history of responding to the changing needs of diverse, under-resourced, disadvantaged communities within Waterloo Region and now Guelph. These communities include individuals infected, affected, and at risk for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, and those impacted by substance use and the opioid overdose epidemic. ACCKWA provides prevention, education, advocacy, and support programs and services. The successful candidate will have both lived expertise and experience working in a way that opposes racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and colonialism in a social services environment. Other preferred skills include the ability to collaborate effectively with people with a wide range of diverse experiences and challenges and knowledge of the principles of adult education, program development and coordination, adaptability, attention to detail, and self-motivation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Community Development and Program Delivery.
  • Execution of an annual program workplan with a timeline and goals derived from agency and funder strategic and operational objectives.
  • Assist in outreach and community consultation activities to identify shelter worker’s harm reduction needs.
  • Develop partnership opportunities with shelters to address harm reduction capacity issues.
  • Actively participate in facilitating interagency connections between ACCKWA’s MACS Drop-In, Harm Reduction program, and Peer program, and relevant shelters.
  • Assist in the development and distribution of harm reduction and overdose prevention training materials, program-specific educational and outreach materials.
  • Develop, recommend and implement public speaking opportunities and/or workshops in a variety of venues.
  • Respond to walk-in office requests for information, referral, harm reduction, risk reduction, clinic and program specific assistance.
  • Assist with program inventory deliveries, provide reliable team-based office coverage across locations.
  • Collaborate within Prevention Team on health promotion/the three levels of prevention Education, Outreach and Volunteer Management.
  • Develop and deliver content to meet the needs of those facilitating a harm reduction and overdose response.
  • Provide training to other service providers on harm reduction.
  • Provide information and referral services online, in person and through outreach initiatives Program Evaluation and Administration.
  • Maintaining monthly statistics, gathering and documenting accurate data to complete reporting requirements.
  • Monitoring and evaluating program activities to ensure optimal quality of service delivery to local communities.
  • Assisting with the preparation of funding reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree, diploma or equivalent experience in social work, social/human services, community development, or adult education preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of harm reduction, HIV/AIDS /STBBI’s and the social determinants of health.
  • Demonstrated anti-racist, anti-oppressive work with diverse disadvantaged communities (i.e. sexual orientation, gender identity, marginalized Indigenous, Black, racialized communities, individuals challenged by addiction).
  • Minimum one-year experience working in a community development capacity with marginalized communities.
  • Strong public speaking abilities and group facilitation skills.
  • Excellent presentation, written communication, and group facilitation skills.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, teamwork, and project management skills.
  • Ability to speak openly and frankly about topics including substance use, recovery, and sexuality in both a culturally sensitive, sex-positive, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, presentation software, online facilitation tools (i.e. Zoom).
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a valid G Class driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
