Halifax, Canada Academica Group Full time

We are seeking NSCC’s next Director of Human Resources. Do you thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where every day brings new opportunities to make an impact? If you're an experienced HR leader passionate about translating strategic, organizational priorities and vision into operational programs and initiatives, this may be the role you’ve been looking for. It is ideal for someone with a solid grounding in human resources, who uses that knowledge to create new and improved programs, policies, and practices. Someone who takes pleasure in a well-oiled process, leverages systems effectively, uses data to inform decisions and applies metrics to monitor progress. Someone who believes there is always a better way to do things and whose passion for continuous improvement is infectious.

At NSCC, our people are our greatest asset. We’re a community-driven institution where students, faculty, and staff come together to create a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and continuous growth. As Director of Human Resources, you’ll play a pivotal role in fostering this vibrant environment.

Through a team of 24 HR professionals, NSCC’s Human Resources department provides human resource expertise and oversight for our pan-provincial organization; across all 14 campuses spanning Yarmouth to Sydney. With a staffing complement of some 2,000 employees, across four employee groups with three collective agreements, our bustling HR department oversees all aspects of human resources, across functional areas that include Payroll & Benefits, Human Resource Consulting, Labour & Employee Relations and Employee Health & Wellness.

Reporting to the Vice President College Services & Strategy, the Director is laser focused on creating an exceptional employee experience. At NSCC you will:

  • Lead and inspire: Provide strategic leadership across all HR functions.
  • Champion diversity, equity & inclusion: Drive initiatives that cultivate a culture where every voice is valued, and opportunities are accessible to all.
  • Innovate for growth: Develop forward-thinking policies and programs to attract, retain, and engage top talent.
  • Be a change agent: Guide the College through transformational HR strategies, ensuring our workforce is agile, resilient, and future-ready.

Our new Director has an undergraduate degree, or a relevant combination of education, professional development and extensive occupational experience, in human resources or a related field. You have ten years of progressively responsible experience resulting in a strong working knowledge of HR functions, trends, and best practices. Your most recent experience includes leading a human resources agenda within a large, complex, unionized organization. You have demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, with experience developing and implementing DEI strategies that promote a culture of belonging and proven ability to lead initiatives that enhance diversity, address systemic inequities, and create opportunities for all employees to thrive. You have direct experience overseeing the labour relations function including developing labour strategies and bargaining plans, influencing positive relations with bargaining agents for unionized employees, and chairing collective bargaining teams. You also have experience overseeing thorough and respectful investigation processes of internal workplace complaints and/or allegations of misconduct; along with direct experience managing sensitive issues. You have experience in and bias for evidence-based decision-making; analytics; research and performance measurement. You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional employee experience.

NSCC makes things happen. We're growing the economy of Nova Scotia, we're producing highly skilled workers, and we're building communities. How are we doing it? By providing the most career-oriented education available in Nova Scotia today; by maintaining close links to industry and community; and by inviting exceptionally talented people to join NSCC's team of 2,000. Consider being a part of excellence in learning and having the chance to help build Nova Scotia's future while building your own.
