Old Toronto, Canada Komi Games Full time
Our Studio

Komi is a developer and publisher of games for PC and consoles headquartered in Toronto, Canada. Our focus is on the creation of fun and immersive gameplay experiences across multiple genres, as well as providing support and porting services for other developers and publishers.

We have recently worked on titles such as King of Fighters XV and are currently working with SEGA to develop a dynamic, character-driven action title.

As a small and tight knit team of industry professionals, we offer an employee experience that stands apart from what you might expect or have experienced in the games industry. A shared love of gaming, nerd culture and a reverence for the rich history of titles we all love and enjoy revisiting not only motivates the way we interact with one another, but also informs the projects we seek to work on.

High-Level Role Summary

The Art Team Lead functions as an internal project manager and subject matter expert, working closely with the Art Director to review tasks, support decisions concerning timelines and prioritization, and disseminate them within the team and supporting third parties. The owner of this role ensures that activities undertaken by the team are aligned with project specifications and completed to schedule.

A working leader, the Art Team Lead will also be called upon to support asset creation, level design and development, optimization efforts and other relevant art-related duties. As team management and mentorship is a shared responsibility with the Director, the Lead will have ample opportunity to work and be hands on as an art generalist.

What to Expect
  • Work closely with the Art Director to strategize, triage and manage art tasks within proscribed project timelines, providing guidance and coaching to team members where appropriate.
  • Provide clear communication and direction to the members of the Komi art team, as well as any outsourced third party support services working with the art team.
  • Build, decorate and polish visually exciting environments that support defined gameplay goals.
  • Create custom assets, materials, and props; and assist with level lighting tasks.
  • Update project planning documentation (e.g., forecasting, resource allocation) and communicate with other Komi teams to ensure estimates are aligned with broader milestones and deliverables.
  • Collaborate and communicate closely with other functional team leads to ensure assets are effectively integrated and optimized.
  • Anticipate, identify, and resolve challenges to project and task completion proactively, raising with the Art Director and relevant stakeholders for support where required.
  • Support the Art Director with mentoring team members, offering feedback and technical support.
  • Performing and participating in other role relevant duties, projects and ad hoc tasks as required.
What We're After

Technical Skills

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience successfully leading or co-leading a team of artists, or an equivalence of informal leadership experience within a game development environment.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of game development experience building, lighting, and optimizing levels.
  • Highly skilled and experienced at building levels in Unreal Engine (using modular kits as well as custom-made assets). Proficiency and considerable experience working in UE is a must.
  • Highly skilled and experienced at creating 3D assets using relevant software tools (e.g., 3DSMax/Maya/Blender, Photoshop, Zbrush, Substance).

Core Competencies

  • The ability to design levels from scratch is considered an asset.
  • A strong balance of technical and artistic skills.
  • Proven leadership skills, demonstrated by a track record of providing meaningful feedback and coaching.
  • Proven project management acumen, able to prioritize and triage tasks and adapt to changes.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as independently.
  • Enthusiasm and dedication to career development, upskilling and remaining current.
  • Demonstrable communication skills.
  • A history of consistently meeting deadlines, escalating issues where appropriate and carefully following direction.
  • Must reside and be eligible to work within Canada.

Applicants must reside and work within Canada; international applicants will not be considered, though your interest in our studio is appreciated

What We Offer

We are pleased to offer a total compensation package predicated on best practices to our people. All full-time, permanent employees are eligible for the following:

  • A competitive and equitable salary, starting at $85,000 (CAD) or greater based on experience and expertise.
  • A comprehensive flex benefits plan, including extended health, dental and wellness offerings.
  • Company matching on optional GRSP contributions.
  • The option of operating on a fully remote basis from a home office with no in-person mandates.
  • Additional perks such as flex hours, unlimited personal time, and savings on work-life resources like gym memberships.
  • The opportunity to work closely with, learn, and grow with industry professionals who have worked in this business for more than twenty years.
