Job Description

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, Head of Growth Equity, the Managing Director, Growth Equity will be an instrumental leader within the growing Growth Equity team. You will be making and managing fund and direct investments, delivering on the group's long-term business and operating goals. While the Growth Equity strategy is not sector-driven, it is likely investments will be focused in and around technology. The position will be based at CPPIB headquarters in Toronto, with in-office presence required and travel expected.

The Growth Equity (“GE”) team mission is to provide CPPIB with strong returns and insights into the innovation and growth ecosystems by making fund commitments and GP-aligned direct investments alongside venture and classic growth managers across North America and Europe. GE is one of five businesses within CPPIB's $190B Private Equity platform and works closely with Public Equities, Credit, and Real Assets. The GE team currently consists of 15 investment professionals across offices in San Francisco and Toronto.

As an ideal candidate, you have experience in and passion for growth investing, an established network, experience working with GPs, and demonstrated people development/leadership. You have built a strong investment track record and bring the required presence and investment judgment to be an effective thought leader for GE. You are also excited to work in a partnership-driven model, making both fund and direct investments alongside GP partners.

We are looking for a pro-active self-starter who is a team-player, results-oriented and passionate about helping a team to be successful. Experience working in a high-performance culture and someone open to and comfortable with constantly evolving and changing priorities and new challenges is preferred.

Role-specific Accountabilities:

  1. Demonstrate deep knowledge of the growth investing landscape with a focus on tech and tech enabled businesses
  2. Apply expertise to develop and execute on an investment opportunity pipeline and manage portfolio of investments
  3. Exercise strong investment acumen and judgment
  4. Take full responsibility for external partner engagement
  5. Lead investment processes in an integrated team environment that utilizes relevant internal and external insights to drive investment edge
  6. Lead due diligence, critically weigh evidence related to key underwriting assumptions
  7. Oversee development of models and documents and lead presentation and review with internal stakeholders
  8. Lead and develop team members across the GE team and contribute to overall team culture and engagement. Drive enterprise-wide impact through an overall commitment to our strategy, consistently making choices that drive value for the enterprise.
  9. Applicant expected to be in-office at least 4 days a week to contribute to collaborative team culture (excluding travel days)

Qualifications

  1. 15+ years of professional experience with 10+ years investing (private/growth equity preferred)
  2. Demonstrated ability to work well in teams, leading when appropriate, and commitment to building an inclusive culture
  3. Superior interpersonal and relationship skills
  4. Superior written and verbal communication skills
  5. Passion for the venture/growth equity ecosystem and interest to invest in a GP-partnership driven investing model
  6. Clear and proven communication and presentation skills (oral and written)
  7. Excellent research, modeling, and analytical skills
  8. Experience conducting due diligence under a compressed timeline, juggling multiple workstreams, and working with external stakeholders (e.g., venture capital and growth equity firms, investment banks, lawyers etc.)
  9. Willingness to travel (10-25% time)
