Position Overview

Under the supervision of the area Vice President and Tunnel Group Lead, the Project Director - Tunneling is fully responsible for all the proposals they will be involved with, with or without the assistance of a project manager. The project manager will take care of the completion of the projects they have tendered and won. The Project Director - Tunneling will plan, direct, organize, coordinate and control, alone or with project managers, the execution of one or more construction projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities
  1. Participation in RFQs and RFPs;
  2. Oversight of projects in their region;
  3. Providing guidance to project managers and superintendents;
  4. Building and maintaining relationships with clients, consultants, and potential clients;
  5. Negotiate agreements with subcontractors, sign letters of intent after discussion with the Vice President;
  6. Verify agreements with subcontractors;
  7. In collaboration with project managers and superintendents, ensure that the work carried out meets the standards and objectives set for quality, safety, and relations in the work, quantity, deadlines, and costs and take the necessary corrective action when required;
  8. When required, assist the Vice President in negotiating customer contract terms;
  9. Monthly verification and discussion with project managers of all cost controls under their supervision and reporting to the Vice President;
  10. Assign staff to work sites, in accordance with the policies of the human resources department and monitor the productivity of resources under their responsibility as well as operating costs;
  11. Ensure customer satisfaction with a concern for safety, costs, schedule, and quality of work;
  12. Ensure the application of and compliance with the EBC health and safety estimate and site specific H&S programs for each project;
  13. Ensure compliance with the company's QA/QC system in accordance with the appropriate ISO standard;
  14. Follow up on ISO procedures with operational staff;
  15. Responsible for site kick-off meetings, periodic reviews, post mortems and participation in planning reviews;
  16. Discuss legal or litigation issues with the Vice President and ensure documentation is in order;
  17. Perform all other tasks required for the execution of the project mandate;
  18. Evaluate personnel under his/her responsibility according to company policies.
Requirements
  1. University Degree/Technology Diploma in Civil or Mining Engineering, or a combination of education and industry experience;
  2. 15-20 years of experience in tunneling;
  3. Previous civil construction experience specifically tunnels, underground works, deep shafts, ground stabilization, metro and rail work;
  4. Strong knowledge of tunnel construction methodologies including: TBM (rock & soft ground); SEM/NATM (soft ground tunneling, face subdivision, pre-support installation, tunnel junction, break outs), cut and cover, road header, and micro-tunneling;
  5. Good knowledge of geology and geotechnical;
  6. Strong experience delivering large scale projects within a partnership environment;
  7. Strong experience with alternative delivery mode projects (Design Build, P3);
  8. Strong knowledge of financial management, as well as building codes and associated legislation;
  9. Strong computer skills, including excellent command of Microsoft Office Suite, and project management and scheduling software;
  10. Frequent travel is required;
  11. Bilingual (an asset), but proficiency in English language with excellent communication skills (written and verbal) is required.
