Overview:

Join our team at YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin. As a Computer Instructor, you will play a crucial role in educating and empowering individuals through computer literacy programs. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by equipping our community with essential digital skills.

General Information:

  • Understand and uphold the purpose and philosophy of the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin.
  • Provide a nurturing environment for the adult learner.
  • Maintain an orderly physical environment conducive to the development of adult learners.
  • The instructor will deliver the curriculum provided to them.

Job Description & Program activities:

  • Set up the site before the learners arrive.
  • Remain at the site until the students are gone and the area has been put in order. If necessary, ensure all laptops are securely placed in the locked computer cabinet at the end of class.
  • Create a welcoming space for adults to learn in a supportive and fun learning environment.
  • Communicate with the learners in a manner that shows respect for their life experiences, goals, and concerns.
  • Deliver computer training to small groups and one-to-one adults utilizing the manuals provided.
  • Complete administration duties, reports, and statistics as required.
  • Keep all information about students strictly confidential.
  • Communicate with the Skills, Training, and Upgrading staff regarding student’s behaviour, any learning difficulties, or any other concerns surrounding the adult education learning environment.
  • Work cooperatively to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
  • Maintain open, consistent communication with all staff. Consult with the Director for any concerns.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages participation and skill development.
  • Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to enhance learning outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • Computer Training experience
  • Experience in delivering education programs to adults.
  • Knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel.
  • Ability to adapt teaching strategies to accommodate different learning styles.

Requirements:

  • This position requires basic computer knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft programs.
  • This program will be delivered in three classes: Intro to Computers, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
  • This is a part-time position, and you would work for 10-16 hours per week, and the work hours are according to the scheduled computer sessions as set out by the program.
  • This program will be delivered in St. Thomas and Aylmer, so commute to both locations is required.
  • During computer sessions, you will work 16 hours per week, which includes 8 hours instruction, 4 hours classroom set-up and take-down, and 4 hours of preparation.
  • During any “Learner Intake” week, you will work 10 hours per week to complete intakes and assessments. Due to the nature of your position, you acknowledge that the hours of work may vary from time to time due to the nature of the business and operational needs. Please note that your working hours will be in accordance with applicable workplace legislation.
  • Be knowledgeable of the emergency fire and basic emergency procedures.
  • Read and understand the YWCA Policies and Procedures. Uphold the purpose and philosophy of the YWCA of St Thomas Elgin.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability:

  • Strong communication skills to interact with students of varying backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Able to work in a team environment as well as a capacity to self-motivate and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to maintain the confidentiality and privacy of information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and using the Internet.
