Chief Engineer

Overview: Responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and repair of all machinery and electrical equipment onboard. Supervision of all engineering officers and engine room ratings and the monitoring of overtime. He is responsible for setting up and adhere to the operating budget for his department as well to abide by the purchasing procedures of the Company and the safeguarding of the owners and the Company’s interests at all times.

Key tasks & responsibilities

Responsible to the master for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS).

  • The Engine-Room department and the safety of the crew, machinery and the environment directly within his control
  • Implementation of the Company policies and procedures concerning his department as enunciated in the SMS
  • Ensuring that the Engine Room department personnel receive formal familiarization training on embarking the vessel via the designated officer onboard
  • The onboard discipline, appraisal of all engine department personnel
  • Safe and efficient operation of the vessel’s machinery and technical plant
  • Monitoring the performance of the main propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery
  • Accurate entry of all of all machinery parameters by the watch keepers /duty engineers in the engine-room log
  • Accurate monitoring and control of the vessel’s fuel and lubricating oil consumption and the status of fuel, bunkers and lubricating oil quantity
  • Resupply of fuel, bunker, lube oil and other fluids as appropriate
  • Compliance with statutory and classification surveys requirements with regards to machinery and relevant spaces
  • Reporting of any accident and/or damage to the vessel’s machinery or technical plant
  • Assessment and mitigation of all identified risk onboard in cooperation with other members of the shipboard management team

Prerequisites

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Possess a valid Canadian passport with an expiry date over six (6) months from the time of joining
  • Possess a valid Transport Canada medical with a validity of six (6) months from the time of joining)
  • Possess the required certification for the position held as per the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and the Manila 2010 amendments for a vessel operating in unlimited waters
  • Possess a valid supervisor of oil transfer
  • Possess a “designated security duties” certificate as per STCW regulation A-VI/6
  • Obtain and hold a “Secret” level security clearance. It is imperative to hold such security clearance as required by the Provision of Services contract between Federal Fleet Services and Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, represented by the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada
