The Canadian operation of GEI is expanding in the Ontario market and GEI is looking for a Materials Testing & Inspection Technician to join our existing team, working on projects across Ontario. This position is based in GEI’s Geotechnical and Earth Sciences office in Barrie, Ontario, and includes regular full-time work (40 hours per week).

  • Compaction testing using a nuclear densometer for engineered fill, bedding, backfill, granular base and sub-base, asphalt, etc.
  • Sampling of soil, granulars and asphalt for laboratory testing.
  • On-site concrete testing or sampling.
  • Subgrade, foundation, and reinforcing steel inspections.
  • Geotechnical laboratory testing (i.e. water contents, hydrometers, etc.).
  • Materials laboratory testing (i.e. proctors, granular sieves, concrete, etc.).
  • Maintain testing equipment in a good condition and maintain calibration.
  • Prepare field inspection reports.
  • Communicate field results with contractors and supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • College diploma in Civil Engineering required.
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of experience preferred.
  • Interested in teamwork, autonomous, and organized.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle which may be used to travel to and from site.
  • Ability to work out of town when needed.
  • Available to work on different shifts and schedules.
  • Available to work on weekends on short notice.
  • Attention to detail and problem solving.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work conditions and schedules on short notice.
  • Ability to listen, learn, & apply as instructed by immediate supervisor.
