Description

The Mustard Seed is committed to helping people who are homeless transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. The Mustard Seed is seeking a Food Services Worker who is responsible to assist with preparing meals for guests.

Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor, the Food Services Worker is responsible, aspart of a team, to assist with preparing meals for guests. The Food Services Worker will ensure all fooddeliveries from suppliers and donations are received, sorted, and stored in the most efficient manner. Maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen and food service areas are also part of this role.

Employment Type: Full Time, 32 hours per week
Schedule: Friday to Monday including mornings 6:00 am to 2:00 pm and evenings 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receive, verify orders and store all purchased food and kitchen items
  • Receive donated goods, sort and move to appropriate area(s)
  • Place food on the giveaway carts during mealtimes
  • Oversee stored food rotation
  • Keep all food inventories up to date
  • Greet and welcome all donors in a professional and respectful manner
  • Assist cook with preparing and serving meals
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, countertops, walls
  • Work in dish-pit cleaning cookware and dishes
  • Respect and follow necessary boundaries with coworkers, volunteers and guests
  • Maintain Occupational Health & Safety Standards
  • Follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared, handled, and stored
  • Required to abide by all Health & Safety protocols including completing a report for all incidents that occur, including near misses, in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience working in the Food Service industry is preferred
  • A valid Alberta Health Services Food Safe certificate
  • Desire to serve in a Christian ministry
  • Ability to successfully prepare food in a commercial kitchen for a large number of clients
  • Be willing to take any necessary training the Mustard Seed requires
  • Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Eight-hour shifts scheduled by manager; weekends may be required
  • Fast-paced demanding work environment
  • Physical effort: moderate to significant amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying (must be able to lift up to 25 to 50 pounds)
  • Mental effort: position is often fast-paced and demanding, requiring substantial mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
  • Daily interactions with colleagues and guests required

  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees sign an agreement indicating that they will respect and not detract from our Statement of Faith.

  • Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
