Overview
The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) has a career opportunity for a Senior Indigenous Engagement Advisor to work with the SRC team and Indigenous communities to develop, implement and maintain positive Indigenous relations.
Accountabilities
This position plays a crucial role in developing and managing Indigenous relations programs, advancing Indigenous relationships, managing complex Indigenous community requests, advancing the SRC Indigenous Action Plan, and supporting senior level business needs, including but not limited to:
- Assist and support the Senior Director, Indigenous Relations in the development and delivery against the annual work plan and priorities. Regularly perform an environmental scan and apprise senior leadership of potential risks.
- Keep up to date on current trends within Indigenous communities and advise the SRC team of these trends.
- Facilitate community engagement and SRC’s communications with local communities.
- Provide strategic and tactical support to all areas of SRC regarding Indigenous issues and opportunities; provide guidance and direction to enable understanding of Indigenous policy, processes and cultural norms.
- Continue building and maintaining trust with the Indigenous communities, leaders and organizations while expertly managing existing productive relationships and networks.
- Work effectively and successfully within multiple Indigenous protocols and policies, with an understanding of the challenges and problems that both Indigenous and northern communities face.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 8 years relevant experience working with Indigenous and northern communities.
- Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Land Stewardship or equivalent is preferred but not required. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
- Understanding of, and experience working with:
- Government and Indigenous processes.
- Government and public procurement.
- Components of sustainable development.
- External funding sources for training and capacity building.
Skills
- Action oriented, strong organizational skills and results focused.
- Demonstrated ability to understand complex and varied circumstances of Indigenous nations, communities and organizations.
- Excellent presentation, facilitation, problem solving and teamwork skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver effective messaging to multiple groups of stakeholders and rights holders and actively listen to all parties.
- Ability to remain apolitical within Indigenous communities and organizations.
- Ability to work collaboratively to form proactive solutions and outcomes.
- Understanding of Denesuline, Cree, Métis and northern cultures is a definite asset.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Occasional travel within Saskatchewan.
- Extended work hours while attending Indigenous events or political gatherings.
The chosen candidate will be required to provide an original Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to SRC prior to the commencement of any employment duties. The Criminal Record Check must have been executed within the preceding 30 days of receipt.
This position is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
