The Cage Wash Technician works under the direct guidance of the Animal Care Manager and general guidance of senior leadership. Responsible for the sanitation of all cage components and related equipment. Processes equipment through mechanical cage, rack, bottle or tunnel washers according to standard operating procedures as well as guidelines set forth in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Responsibilities
- Processes all animal cage components and related equipment through mechanical cage, bottle, rack or tunnel washers etc. Ensures proper sanitation using standard temperature assurance indicators and reports any failures immediately to the Supervisor.
- Processes all waste bedding material using either a vacuum HEPA filtered bedding disposal unit or equivalent.
- Operates mechanical cage wash units according to department standard operating procedures and Manufacturer instructions. Reports all mechanical failures and deficiencies immediately to the Supervisor.
- Stages cage components into units using appropriate bedding and enrichment material. Ensures that cage components are in excellent working condition and reports any deficits to the Supervisor immediately.
- Operates steam autoclaves to sterilize equipment as required. Ensures proper sterilization using cycle assurance indicators. Records all results on the Autoclave Assurance Log. Reports failures immediately to the Supervisor.
- Operates boiler to provide steam, ensures the appropriate level of steam is available prior to commencing cage processing activities. Reports all mechanical failures and deficiencies immediately to the Supervisor. Ensures that all logbooks, checklists, and other records are completed as scheduled.
- Responsible for daily maintenance of assigned areas including general cleaning, surface sanitization, unscheduled and scheduled sanitizations.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Environmental Working Conditions
• Potential of exposure to disinfectants, chemicals, biologics, animal dander, and dust.
• Normal scientific laboratory conditions, may work with hazardous materials and unpleasant odors.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED required.
- 0-1 years related work experience required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
