Support Staff Regular Part-time New Position

(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements)

The Technologist aids and supports faculty by demonstrating skills to students and completing remedial instructions for students who require further assistance in mastering practical skills, as well as oversight in evaluating student performance. The incumbent is responsible for the set-up, operation, and maintenance of a wide variety of machines, and providing technical support in matters of complex nature, requiring a high degree of independent judgment, technical specialization, and experience. The incumbent will also assist in the ordering and maintaining of inventory, as well as safety management system process improvements to meet program needs.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department working on-site during all working hours at the Cambridge Skilled Trades campus, located at 25 Reuter Drive, Cambridge, ON N3E 1A9.

Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrates practical skills and the safe use of equipment to students
  • Provides remedial instruction to students requiring further assistance in mastering required practical skills
  • Participates in the evaluation of student performance in the shop and provides input on course content, reviews curriculum, and set up of programs with faculty
  • Provides support related to facilities and equipment, procurement, Gift-in-Kind, and Health & Safety
  • Maintains shop facilities and equipment, including repairs and preventative maintenance to equipment or sub-contracting the repairs of equipment
  • Assists in the evaluation and maintains inventory management system of equipment, equipment manuals, and supplies
  • Prepares purchase requisitions for student materials, shop supplies, and machine parts
  • Works closely with Facilities Management around Shipping & Receiving and facilities management
  • Assists with capital procurement by ensuring competitive process, verifying pricing, and receiving quotes
  • Establishes and prepares Gift-in-Kind documentation, works with industry to secure donations for shops, and assists in the negotiation of consumables purchases with suppliers
  • Works closely with the Purchasing department to ensure supplies and equipment are ordered according to College policies; Provides monthly credit card documentation
  • Collaborates with the Health & Safety department by providing documentation and reports, updating shop binders, documenting inventory of supplies and equipment, maintenance repair, shipping, and assessment/disposal of hazardous goods
  • Implements and maintains a robust safety management system for the precision machining shop
  • Participates in Health & Safety, College, and OEM training as required
  • Provides orientation to machine and shop procedures and protocols to new Part and Full-time Technologists, Faculty, and student helpers; Ensures tasks are completed and in line with established outcomes
  • Monitors the progress of Work Study Student Technician Assistants
  • Organizes and prepares instructional environment, supporting demonstration of practical skills based on established learning objectives
  • Collaborates with other Technologists to ensure consistency within shops
  • Develops workshop activities and projects, set-ups, and delivers workshop activities for non-college students and other visitors
  • Provides back-up support for other Technologists and Technicians
Qualifications:
  • Certificate of Qualification in a Precision Machining Trade (General Machinist (429A), or Tool & Die Maker (430A), or Machine Tool Builder & Integrator (430M), Mould Maker (431A) or Tooling/Tool Maker(630T)) is required; Certificate of Apprenticeship is preferred
  • Five years of practical experience in the field with experience in CNC programming and operation and manual machining
  • Flexible with strong organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, program team, vendors, partners, etc.
  • Leadership and problem solving skills
  • Able to model safe and respectful conduct
  • Willing to obtain and maintain First Aid certification
  • Willing to upgrade ability by taking courses, seminars, etc. to remain current with evolving technologies
