Primary Purpose: Pewaseskwan (the Indigenous Wellness Research Group) is a multi-partner research group which works with community to strengthen capacity and meaningfully collaborate to undertake responsive, equitable, innovative, impactful community-centred research to improve First Nations, Métis and Inuit wholistic health and wellness.

Pewaseskwan carries out core functions (projects) including knowledge gathering, translation and training; Indigenous research and engagement expertise; and consultation and research services. Each project is supported by a lead and dedicated staff. All projects are approached collaboratively, drawing upon and capitalizing on diverse strengths and interests within the team, and linking with other organizations as required. Content and method expertise is provided by dedicated research methodologists, other researchers and learners.

Pewaseskwan is geographically located in Saskatoon and Vancouver to fully take advantage of existing resources offered in both locations. Pewaseskwan builds strategic, working relationships throughout the country through video and teleconferencing services as well as in person visits.

The Nurse will be primarily clinical, co-developing an innovative and responsive nurse-led prevention, treatment and care program. They will participate in a distributed team which includes administrative staff, pharmacy staff, people working in community including in the inner-city and more rural and remote settings. The Nurse is expected to work up to 2-3 days per week, negotiable upon availability and need. The Nurse must be available Tuesday mornings for in-person clinics at RUH (08:00-12:00 CST). Otherwise, hours can vary but are typically within typical business hours. Some flexibility is required to meet community needs during evenings and weekends.

The Nurse will become involved with Pewaseskwan research, depending on alignment of need and their availability, interest and talents.

Nature of Work:
A highly motivated, experienced Nurse is needed for clinical and supporting a health services research program. This would consist of partial remote patient management and partial in-person clinical management of patients. Willingness to attend occasional clinics in the north with travel arranged. The Nurse will be responsible for supporting weekly HCV clinics run out of RUH outpatient department which will be arranged by administrative staff, ongoing patient care including triaging referrals, conducting assessments, maintaining charts, and working closely with administrative staff, both in-person and remotely. As community and people with lived/living experience are so central to hepatitis C elimination, the Nurse will develop strong partnerships to collaboratively reach people often under-served or badly served by the healthcare system. The Nurse will be proficient with electronic medical records (training on specific system will be provided if needed). In addition, the Nurse will contribute to the planning and management of an HCV-specific ECHO model supporting peer work professional development and other initiatives such as ongoing patient education and advocacy.

The Nurse will be based at the Pewaseskwan office, University of Saskatchewan.

The Nurse will work closely with the Cameco Chair, RUH support and administrative staff, and the Executive Director overseeing clinical aspects of the Pewaseskwan Research Group.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Must be eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) with AAP designation.
  • Registered with SUN.
  • Minimum five years nursing experience.
  • Preferred northern nursing experience in primary care and in Indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to working well with people in complex and sometimes unstable situations as well as working through challenges in northern and inner-city communities.
  • Other relevant experience and certifications in northern nursing and Indigenous health care is an asset.
  • Indigenous ancestry is an asset, as is fluency in Indigenous language.
  • Passionate agent of change with a focus on the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and harm reduction.
  • Mandatory or willing to obtain on an urgent basis:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS-C)
    • De-escalation training through the youth solvent committee
    • Mental Health First Aid
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Willingness to work with Elders, community workers (support staff, patient navigators, travel coordinators), pharmacy team located in diverse settings
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, analytically and respond to a broad range of situations with a high level of independence.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to exercise tact and discretion.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Administrative experience, skills and knowledge in research is an asset.
