The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.
The Director, Marine Transportation Services is based in Hay River, NT and is responsible for the effective and profitable provision of essential marine transportation services and the immediate and long-term viability of the business activity that is the Government of the Northwest Territories Marine Transportation Services (MTS).The Director is responsible for the operation of the GNWT Shipyard in Hay River, and the marine terminals in Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk. The value of assets under the Director's control exceeds 200 million dollars.
The Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position are:
- Extensive knowledge of northern and arctic marine transportation operations and handling of cargo, containers and bulk fuel;
- Extensive knowledge of domestic marine regulations and legislation;
- General knowledge of International marine regulations and legislation;
- Expert demonstrated operational risk management and contingency planning skills
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
A diploma and ten (10) years of recent, current, proven, progressive and directly related experience in marine or similar transportation service business operations. Including, five (5) years at a senior management level with a focus on operations planning, and business development. Recent and current experience providing senior leadership and managing within a successful transportation profit and loss business environment is essential.
