A qualified Maintenance Millwright at Vancouver Shipyards ensures consistent installation, maintenance, and optimization of machines and equipment, and other tools critical to the operational success of the manufacturing process.

This opportunity is for overnight shift (9:30pm – 5:30am) only.

As a Millwright Apprentice, you will be expected to practice and build on your knowledge of basic mechanical systems and machinery for maintenance and repair while ensuring you are compliant with Seaspan’s health, safety, and environmental standards. Support and direction will be provided by Supervisors, Chargehands, Journeypersons, and Mentors. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the trade which will allow you to succeed in your education and progress throughout an apprenticeship and achieve Red Seal Certification. Millwright Apprentices who uphold Seaspan’s Core Values and demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn will be successful in this role.

Duties & Accountabilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints and drawings
  • Perform alignment, rigging, layout and a variety of hand tooling
  • Repair defective machine parts and systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures and accurately document the work
  • Apply mechanical repair principles and procedures to ensure machinery functions properly
  • Maintain Electromechanical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics
  • Must be able to work in a construction environment involving confined spaces, working at heights, physical labour, and various weather conditions
  • Must be able to be qualified to wear a respirator

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum Grade 12 Education
  • Completion of Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Foundation Program in B.C.
  • If hired, any of the pre-registered schooling may be re-scheduled at the discretion of the Operations Facilities Manager

Skills & Required Competencies:

  • Comprehend and follow written and spoken directions
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal in the English language
  • Ability to work in a team environment or individually with a positive attitude
  • Good judgement and reasoning skills
  • Perseverance and ambition
