Central West Specialized Developmental Services (CWSDS) is a leader in providing supportive living, community participation supports and specialized services, assessment and treatment to people who have developmental and intellectual disabilities, dual diagnosis, and/or challenging behaviours throughout the municipalities of Halton, Peel and Dufferin and the regions of Waterloo and Wellington.

As a specialist in the field of developmental and intellectual disabilities, CWSDS has experienced continued growth over the last five years. As such, we are looking to hire Registered Nurses, on a casual Relief basis. This position reports to the Nurse Manager.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Examining and monitoring individuals as required for illness, injury, bowel movements, challenging behaviours, or psychiatric needs.
  • Interpreting the physician’s orders to direct care staff.
  • Responding to medical emergencies as required and providing appropriate follow-up.
  • Coordinating the clinics such as medical, psychiatric and neurological and assisting the medical personnel with these clinics.
  • Administering treatments and performing procedures that require nursing skills such as prescribed injections, stomas, blood pressure, dressing changes, fleet enemas etc.
  • Monitoring drug therapy in accordance with the physician’s orders and the organization policies, and information/data shared with us by the Primary staff.
  • Performing delegated medical acts sanctioned by the Ontario College of Nurses.
  • Completing rounds as needed on a regular basis to each house and service area.
  • Completing nursing assessments, progress reports and health care plans that summarize the individual’s health needs and health-related activities as per CWSDS’ protocol.
  • Participating as a member of the inter-disciplinary team representing other health team members, such as physician, dentist, psychiatrist etc.
  • Consult with Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Behavioural Therapist and Speech Therapist-Language as required.
  • Liaising with hospital staff when individuals are admitted on a short-term basis.
  • Individual health care plans should be developed by the nurse as the need is identified by the Area Manager, Manager or physician.
  • Communicating with parents/families or Substitute Decision maker (SDM) regarding health related matters concerning their/family member when requested.
  • Educate direct care staff/family regarding the management of specific diseases and medical conditions, such diabetes, epilepsy, head lice, scabies, etc.
  • Teaching new techniques, procedures, treatments and skills consistent with the needs of direct care staff relating to the health needs of the individuals and within the mandate of a Registered Nurse.
  • Participating in the regular review of individual health needs including medication, physicals etc.
  • Coordinating referral information to medical consultants and ensuring the follow up of recommendations.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and participating in the medication delivery system of medications and treatments for the individuals.
  • Maintaining the appropriate documentation for individuals assigned in the nurses’ caseload, including reports, health care plans, PRN protocols etc.
  • Performing other duties that include but are not limited to completing special projects as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements Skills & Knowledge

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, with registration as a Nurse (R.N.) in Ontario, plus significant experience after graduation providing professional nursing services to individuals with mental health challenges, challenging behaviours and/or developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the theories, methods, and techniques of developing nursing treatment programs for individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, and in particular those with a dual diagnosis.
  • Demonstrated abilities to work independently without daily supervision and colleague support.
  • Strong assessment, planning, priority setting, and problem-solving skills in order to organize and carry out a demanding workload and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing relationships with community service organizations such as laboratories, clinics, CCAC and Public Health.
  • Demonstrated ability to also work closely as a member of an inter-disciplinary assessment and treatment team.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and listening skills in order to consult effectively with individuals under your care, their families, various other community-based organizations and professionals, such as local physicians and psychiatrists. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are required to prepare assessments and nursing/medical treatment plans, etc.
  • Computer skills are required in word processing to prepare various reports and memos, etc.
  • Judgement in providing professional nursing services to individuals in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Practices of the College of Nurses of Ontario. Good initiative and judgement in order to carry out the assigned responsibilities in a time-effective manner, and in determining how to meet the complex needs for nursing services of individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness.
  • Sound judgement in determining when to inform, or consult with, the Clinical Director or delegate regarding a situation, issue, or problem that is outside of the norm. Position uses judgement in ensuring that in handling of client information, the privacy and confidentiality requirements of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act are followed.

Other Job Requirements

  • Ability to work day, afternoon and rotational weekend shifts, and work flexible hours, including on-call when required.
  • 12-hour shifts, 8am - 8pm. No overnight shifts required.
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and a vehicle to travel to a CWSDS property.
  • Being fully vaccinated for covid-19 (minimum 2 doses)

Job Type: Casual

Pay: $29.90-$43.23 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 24 per week
