Volunteer Coordinator

Hours: 40 hrs / week for a 1 year contract

Compensation: $24/hr

Reporting to the CEO and the Manager of Customer Experience, the Volunteer Coordinator takes primary responsibility for designing, managing, promoting, and evaluating an expanded volunteer program, providing detailed and structured volunteer opportunities for the best outcomes for our community, including support for the Friends of the Midland Public Library. They’ll also provide general support to ensure high levels of customer service. Evening & weekend work is required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Actively recruits volunteers and market the benefits of being a volunteer
  • Trains, schedules, and matches the skills of the volunteers to appropriate positions
  • Works with department heads to research and identify appropriate volunteer opportunities and positions
  • Develops and maintains information and outreach materials, including brochures, slide shows, information packets, flyers, guides, and other documents.
  • Ensures all volunteers are informed about department programs, services, and activities and that Library staff is informed about the volunteer program.
  • Serves as liaison to the Friends of the Midland Public Library, which requires attendance at their meetings
  • Keeps records of volunteer activities. Maintain database of volunteers, skills, training, duties and hours worked.
  • Assists the Friends of the Midland Public Library with the Bookstore, and book sales
  • Drafts, maintains, and publishes guidelines, best practices, and procedures for volunteer opportunities and positions
  • Coordinates volunteer recognition events and activities
  • Identifies and implements ways to recruit new volunteers through community outreach, public relations programs, volunteer recruiting fairs, local volunteer agencies and organizations, and other service organizations. Participates in community events and outreach activities.
  • Provides monthly reports to supervisor on volunteer activities, strategies and issues.
  • Performs other duties as required to support library operations.

What do you need to bring to this position?

Education: College or University diploma in Business, Human or Social Services or a related field. Possession of a Volunteer Management Certificate is preferred. An equivalent level of experience is welcome.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of program management, fund-raising, public relations or related experience is preferred.

License: Possession of a valid driver’s license by the time of appointment.

  • A motivated and outgoing personality with a passion for helping the community with a willingness to grow and take on additional responsibilities and tasks to support library volunteer services.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with word processing, graphic design, web-based, and database programs.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision and to project a positive, helpful image to the public.
  • Ability to cooperate with other staff to ensure effective and efficient delivery of library volunteer services.

Physical requirements: This position will include periods of frequent standing, bending, lifting and moving materials.

Note: This position consists of varied schedules which include day, evening and weekend shifts.
